Newbie/Greenhorn/Rookie's First Attempt at a No1 MKIII Sporter to Military Conversion

Great job getting another old Mk.III back her self respect! I would avoid sandpaper, though, and try to avoid the use of stain. Some of the wood on L-E's doesn't take stain very well, and the results can be downright weird! Hard to remove it, too. When I apply boiled linseed oil, I thin the first coat with turpentine, and brush it on thick. Let it soak in for a couple of hours, and then rub it in well with your hand, and wipe off the excess. Thinning it helps it penetrate deeply into the wood, makes the later work go faster. It also helps if you keep the oil warm. Put it in a pyrex measuring cup and keep it on a mug warmer. And linseed oil is great for your hands! I never have dry hands even in the Winter. :)

I think I am going to avoid stain the next one and use Lou's approach for the furniture stripper. Hopefully I'll get a wood kit that is lighter in color.

Just a question, how long is the barrel on yours? I have a Parker hale Lithgow, but I do not know if is been chopped or not. when I line up the actions, it is quite a bit shorter then my dad's No.4 but I am not sure. I don't think its worth restoration, I will just keep it sportered so I have a low worry shooter.

The standard 635 mm/25 in. It wasn't cut down.

For a nicer finish...do not use sand paper....use differing grades of steel wool. Sandpaper removes wood, the steel wool does to a nearly non existant degree but puts the residue into the nooks and crannies of the wood. Leaves the wood in an almost factory state. You can use sandpaper to remove wood if necessary in places covered by metal.

I believe Parker-Hale rifles aren't considered to be bubbas, and are considered collectable as they are.

If you're looking to restore a lee enfield, look for one that had the wood shortened by the innovative Bubba with a hacksaw.

Yes, pretty much 100% of all $100.00 +/- Enfields on EE are cut stocks. They removed the upper woods and took a lathe to the bottom piece. While I cannot confirm it even my buttstock on my Enfield was smaller than the DP one.
