Hey all,

I'm newer to firearms but just want to ask about something I noticed today while cleaning my Stevens 555. I bought this gun to hunt grouse in the area and have put around 60-70 rounds of steel shot #6 or #7.5 through it. Have always cleaned it very well.

Is it normal for these holes to become oblong this early on? The gun is still under warranty.

Hi All - thanks for your replies. I just reached out to Savage/Stevens about this plate deforming at the holes; concerned there may be a safety issue with the gun. I haven't used it since I wrote this original post so it's been sitting. Up to now, I haven't had any issues firing it. Hoping they can shed some light on why it happened...not sure if just replacing the plate will be enough.

I have a 555, manymany rounds fired without issue. Mind you, never fired a single round of steel. Also, why steel for upland birds?

I have a bunch of it - wife prefers steel to lead in her food (yes I know...).

Happy to hear yours is working out - love how light the gun is...joy to carry for grouse.

I had a Yildiz 20G O/U (basically the same gun as the 555) and it had the same type of oblong holes as you. I think it has something to do with the strikers being at sharp angles to fit into the receiver (normal). Never had any issues with mine.

Correct. The pins are not square with the face. They are angled, thus the oval channel.

Some shotgun manufacturers have their firing pins angled

The firing pin hole is possibly being enlarged. Eventually you will get light strikes or no strikes at all.

Because that plate is removable, you can have one milled or get the parts list for your firearm and try to source that part.

Are you doing a bunch of dry firing? if so use snap caps.
The top firing pin is on a upward angle ,so it could be hitting the top of the hole , should not, But with out gun in hand , hard to tell
Have a real good look at that pin and see if you see wear on the top side of the pin

Really appreciate the reply - same experience with me so far with reliability...happy to hear I'm not the only one.

The 555 doesn't allow for dry firing (trigger only works with a shell in the chamber). The pins still look ok at this point.
