Well what to say, I am new to the site and even newer to shooting (never fired a gun before) but it is something I want to try and am planning on getting my PAL as soon as I can. Was hoping that someone in the area (Kingston ON) might have some pointers, or even better show me the ropes at the gun club. Anyway I plan on checking this site out on a regular basis, from what I have seen so far it will definitely be of use to me in my search for the right gun.

You're in the right place for starters. Lots of information here, but it often leads to lots of temptation to spend your money!! Read up on the forums, and get out to do your PAL course, it's great!

What is your main interest? Handgun, Rifle, shotgun, clays, hunting...

Welcome Jim,

I too am not far from Kingston, if you have any questions feel free to PM me.

Cheers,
Gian

Also not far from Kingston (Belleville-ish). This is a great place to get your feet wet... I just hope you brought a snorkle. ;)

I'm in Kingston as well, though I'll be out of the country for a goodly while in a few weeks.

I take it you've already paid a visit to Frontenac Rifle and Pistol Club? If you haven't, I've got to say that the facilities are very good with a lot of outdoors ranges and an indoors pistol range. Membership dues are also extremely reasonable.

As for the right gun, get your PAL and borrow what you can and go to the local gun stores to handle what you can. Gun Mart in Brockville is pretty well-stocked, as is Target Sports Center in Gormley. Kelly's is a bit hit and miss, though.

Hey, I am located just outside of Belleville in Ameliasburg. Lot's of clubs around and almost any of the guys would be more then happy to "show you the ropes" so to speak.

Lots of good replies, thanks to everyone for the welcome. Mostly I am interested in rifle/shotgun and handguns for target shooting though the way things are going these days it might be a waste to get my RPal and a handgun seing as hoe everyone seems to want to make handguns illegel. Oh well I still might go for it.

I will definitely get around to Frontenac Rifle and Pistol Club and hopefully, since I have never fired a gun before, find someone to let me shoot one or two of theirs, see if I even like it (though I am quite sure I will).

No, Mr. Canuck, getting your RPAL is no waste of time. Handgun ownership isn't illegal, and if we, the firearms community, start thinking that getting handguns is futile, we've already lost that fight.

As for people letting you shoot without a PAL, some shooters out there will be pretty leery of letting you use their toys. I've let friends of mine without PALs shoot, as my guests, but the whole time I had a hand on their shoulder and I was ready to throw them down if they did something stupid.

Before you make your way to FRPC, you should definitely get your PAL. In that case, you can sign up right off the bat, and you'll already have some understanding and knowledge of firearms before you fire your first live round.

Good Day & welcome to the world of shooting sports. We at the FRPC (2007)
will be pleased to assist you in your transition from a common man to a bonifide gun nut.

Well it looks like I will be heading out to the FRPC as soon as I can, with PAL or without depending on when I can get one. Will be nice to at least chat with some people face to face and get some pointers right from the start.

Not always a lot of people around the club this time of year in my experience, outside anyway... The handgun folks are often at the indoor range. But as previously mentioned, I think most would be leery of letting a non-member/non PAL person who "just dropped by" fire their guns. Check http://www.fseso.org/613.htm and call around to see who may be offering a course soon. Or drop by the Cataraqui Canadian Tire ammo lockup, there's usually some ads up about upcoming courses.

PM me if I can help

I'm in Kingston and a member of FRPC (Frontenac Rifle and Pistol Club) on Macadoos Lane. I shoot Shotgun, Rifle and Pistol there and even do a little bit of IPSC. Come out on Tuesday night around 6pm for Pistol night and introduce yourself. I'm sure lots of people there will be able to answer your questions and show you the ropes. If you ask nice, I'm sure someone there (I'm willing) to let you try a few pistols out to see how you like it and what you might be interested in. If you're shy, PM me and I'll meet you at the club anytime to let you try anything you like. I'm no expert but I'm willing to help a new guy get started.
It think its great that new people are still getting into the sport and we shouldn't discourage newbies. We were all newbies at one time.

Thanks for the offer, I just may take you up on that next tuesday. I am still not sure about pistol shooting so it would be nice to talk to people and maybe try it out to see if I want my RPAL as well as my PAL.
