Newbie in Ottawa looking for advice

I live in Greely On. (basically Ottawa) and I really want to get into the hobby/sport... I grew up shooting with my grandfather at our cottage in Muskoka , he taught small arms in ww2 and taught me how to shoot as well, He was always very strict with safety as that is most important... he also taught me breathing techniques and target shooting. I don't yet have my license but i have the funds to take the course for both cfsc & crfsc and am very interested in joining a club. I don't know any body in my area that belongs to a club, so to be honest i don't know much about them or what it takes to become a member, I do know that they don't make a whole lot of money and require volunteers, so i would be pleased to help out with anything i can. I am a construction contractor and often have some free time on my hands as well as tons of tools so i can always help with maintenance if need be, and would enjoy doing so. I know there is the Eastern Ontario Hand Gun Club near by and that they also offer the IPSC Black Badge Course which i would like to take. My best friend is coming back from his tour in Afghanistan in the end of may and we would like to be able to go to a range and target shoot. Obviously he has his restricted licensing already and would wait for me to get mine. So I am trying to get some info about the sport in my area, I would like to get a hand gun to start and am very interested in getting an AR15 as well but am open to any suggestions. Also we would both like to eventually get into hunting. I was wondering if there are any mentors in my area that could help me learn more about what i will need, to accomplish these goals. Any help will be greatly appreciated... Please feel free to PM me as i am looking forward to any information i can get.
Thanks

welcome to the site, for your cfsc & crfsc you can contact the RA club, they have a course on all the time. For a club in Ottawa, they have all kinds of club that can offer you a bite of everything, for me i shoot on the Quebec side at about 1 hour from Ottawa.

:welcome:
EOHC is a good inexpensive, outdoor club. During the week, you have things pretty much to yourself.
The RA is where I shoot in the winter, (indoors;)) and is good but the facilities can become crowded on pistol nights.
Nice bunch of people at either location.

I'm with EOHC and it is a nice option. As others have said it is not very busy and normally you will have a range to yourself with the exception of weekends in the summer. The range is open sunrise to 6:00PM all year round and if you don't mind the cold your almost guaranteed a range to your self anytime in the winter. The range has 3 50m pistol ranges (2 more in the works) and it also has a 100 and 200 M rifle range. Not to expensive I think it is about $200 a year.

I've been thinking of checking out the Grenville fish and game club which would be more your way. They are even cheaper then EOHC at $65 a year but don't know what services they have to offer.

EOHC is open 9am till 6pm for centrefire,
and then rimfire only till dusk.
Grenville is cheaper, but farther to drive,
and their facility is only half the size.
I beleive they also have restricted times for allowable shooting.
ie: no shooting past 3 or 4 on weekends or someting like that.

Grenville has the absolutely nicest clubhouse I've ever seen on an outdoor range. It even beats the old-fashioned verandahs at Connaught! EOHC has the most layouts and has plenty of activity. Pick your poison.

Can't wait! I think I'll join EOHC for sure... And I'll check out the others if there cheap it may be worth having more than one membership, indoors may be convenient. I wouldn't mind shooting outdoors in the winter, its all part being Canadian.

Would love to come check it out... I'll get some cowboy boots...lol
I trust the guns should fit with the times eh?
I'll need an old lever action rifle and a long barrel revolver... and a good hat.

Firearms (clones) of those in use from the 1860's to 1898
You usually use two single action handguns and a rifle using lead bullet, pistol calibre ammunition. So no jacketed ammo, 30-30's etc.
Shotguns can be a SXS, an 1887 lever action or a '97 pump, depending on the class you decide to shoot in.
Just come out to the range to see what it's all about and try out a stage with loaners to see if CAS is your thing.
Getting geared up then discovering it's not for you can get expen$ive.

I find it warmer lying on the ground in -20 with a 20 k wind
when coyote hunting,
than going to the rifle range when its 10 degres warmer.
It depends where your thoughts are at the time.
