I wish I could find one that would hold more than 5 for the Savage, even with 3 mag's it just not enough.....
Would be nice to find a 10 round mag at least.....

Anyone ever used .17HMR in a semi-auto? I heard there were some safety issues there.

I have a Marlin 60 Stainless in .22 with a boyds stock and love it, its my go to gophering gun. That being said I also and doing up a Stevens Fav 30r17 in .17HMR this winter cause when it come to coyotes past 50yds the .22 just ain't enough. The .17 will take 'yotes out to about 200 if you do your part but I'd still rather have the option of both rather then pick one caliber. With the price of rimfire rifles these days its easy to have both.
How is it working on the coyotes? Head shots?
There is alot of hate from .22lr people on the net for the.17hmr. But after firing the .17hmr there really is no comparsion other than price.
I love my ruger 10/22 but once I get the .17hmr I think it might be sitting for longer periods than it has.
My biggest question is stoping power at 150yrds for bigger varmits. my buddy said no probs and head shots on rabbits at 100yrd still rips the head right off.
He has the $300 savage and shoots 1/4 to 3/8groups at 100yrds all day long. Thats his word but after shooting 20rd out of it I must say I believe him 100%.he did put a round through a penny at about 100yrd + or - a few yards

If you have to stretch to buy a more expensive rifle than buy the Savage, or CZ. The extra money in a $1000 .17 HMR rifle is really about name, finish and parts quality. With .17 HMR you are not really gaining much in the accuracy department, as the round itself is inherently accurate. I've watched a fella shoot several 1/4" - 4 round groups with my Anschutz, but I can't make it do that. I guess you can't always buy accuracy. I have a few very expensive rifles that make my Anschutz seem inexpensive, but when I hold and shoot it, it makes me smile and is one of my favorite guns. I've held Savage .17 HMR's but they felt cheap in my hands. That being said, they were lower end Savage models. Personally I like the CZ for best for your buck. I'd get the set trigger, or the new trigger that is supposed to be coming out.

I don't have any real-world long range experience with the HMR but I have done quite a bit of experimenting at the range.
I shot a lot of 500ml water bottles at 200 yards using the 17 grain v-max. At that distance the slug enters the bottle, and completely disintegrates inside with no exit. The bottle itself will usually remain standing. When I collect it there is nothing but copper and lead fragments in the bottom as well as the plastic tip.
A .22 Lr at the same distance (aiming about 4 feet high
) will usually zip completely through and usually knock them down.
I am pretty confident the HMR would really mess up a small animal like a gopher, but I would not try it on a coyote at that distance.

At 26 cents a round, HMR is "very expensive". At 26 cents a round, milsurp 7.62 is "dirt cheap". If I want to go out and shoot off 500 rounds, I might make it 400 .22 and 100 HMR, or 450 .22 and 50 HMR. It's pricey if you want to shoot it like .22, but IMO it's complimentary to .22, not a replacement for it.
People keep saying I would rather shoot .223 but in all honesty I do not have the patience to reload rounds. Its way to much work to tumble the casings for an hour to clean them, push out the old primer and prime the case, knecking, lubing, yada yada yada the list goes on. All to save a couple of cents per round. The time saved (which is significant from buying in comparison to reloading), I would rather be doing something else. I am getting tired of people complaining about the price of HMR, you don't like it? simple solution DON'T SHOOT IT! It is a great round just like .22 mag and .223 but every round has its positives and negatives.

I have no info on that particular rifle, but know Volquartsen does it right with theirs. Basically you can't just change the barrel on a 22mag, the timing is different and hence people have had problems. iirc there's a warning on the Hornady site regarding this.
