Hi all, I am based in the east Kootenays of BC. Just got my PAL and hoping to get into precision shooting and some hunting if I can find guys to learn from. I am looking at the Tikka T3X UPR as a hybrid rifle in 308 Winchester, though I've been told I should start with a rim fire 22 LR since the ammo is a lot cheaper. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks

Welcome aboard Gunnutz.
Nothing wrong with starting with a decent .22 rifle.
All of the fundamentals apply to ELR shooting.
Ammo cost is way cheaper, no recoil, can do most of your shooting under 150 meters.
The only fly in the ointment is the cost of quality 22 rifles lately.
Have fun and good luck

My first rifle was a 308 Springfield armouries M1A. Dad never owned a 22 in his life. So I never agreed on the whole you must start on 22. I also had a 45acp 1911 as my first pistol.

Get what your budget allows to spend on ammo. Then again ammo was much cheaper back then.

Hi Shellac - I got my PAL earlier in 2024 and was lucky to join Sharon Gun Club (SGC) in GTA. My 1st 22LR bolt action was Ruger American Long-Range and I love it. It's very accurate and consistent!

I always recommend a nice 22lr bolt.
Even if you bought the 308 at the same time, ammo costs alone would still have you shooting the 22 a lot more.
And of course the more you practice the better you can get so it's just a win win firearm.
Also your first large caliber purchase may change a bit down the road as you gain more experience/knowledge. I know mine did. Take your time.
The one correct (for me of course) purchase I did after getting my PAL was bought a cz453 brand new and a decent scope. I still love it and it has earned the name "ol painless" because of the countless numbers of gophers its taken. Extremely accurate and well made. Worth every penny and still shot with pride.

Hey, I am also a new member here that recently got my PAL and I have the same thought process. I want to learn to hunt with a Winchester Model 70. Before that though, I know I need some time on the range first. 22LR ammo is so much cheaper I am thinking of getting a CZ457 for the range this year and trading up next year.
