I want to get into IPSC. I dabbled with it YEARS ago (late 80's).

Will a bone stock Glock 17 cut it for a beginner these days?

I understand that there are classes that have modified pistols, but I am just looking to get my feet wet for now.

Yes, it will work out fine.

IPSC Production Division is for guns from an approved list, the Glock is on that list.

The only modifications allowed in Production Division are as follows:
Replacement of parts with OEM factory parts that are an option for the approved model.
Replacement of sights with aftermarket sights of the same type (post and notch or application of sight black.
Replacement of grips or application of grip tape (skateboard tape). Rubber sleaves are prohibited.
Replacement of magazines with non OEM factory magazines of the same length.

Realistically, the only changes you could make to a Glock 17 to improve it's shootability would be:

Fibreoptic front sight and an adjustable aftermarket sight or better iron sights.
Grip tape.
3.5 pound connector (trigger bar) for a reduced trigger pull weight)
factory extended magazine release and slide release.

My personal G17 has a set of Heine night sights and a 3.5 pound connector, no other changes. A few years ago I qualified for the Australian IPSC team with it, so it's not a bad rig.

If you do change the connector, check the trigger pull, it must have a minimum weight of 5 pounds.

The factory sights are pretty poor, you may have a hard time with distant targets, but for training and your first few matchs a stock glock will be more than adequate.

Great gun for production divison, you can run with it right out of the box, but the sights should be on the top of the list for upgrades.
