newbie lever .44 mag

hi guys, a newbie to lever action.
Recently, for some odd reason, the .44 mag lever action really grow itself on me and now i am thinking about getting one...
I did some research and pretty much narrow down to 3 brands:
1. Henry, of which i cant afford.
2. Marlin 1894
3. winchester 1894

The marlin and Remengton looks pretty much alike to me, whats the difference between the two?
Also, i am left-handed, so will the ejected shell hit me in the face ?

I do not believe that Remington makes a .44 Magnum.What you are looking at is most likely a Marlin Model 1894 .The full name for the .44 Magnum is the .44 Remington Magnum.The .44 Remington Magnum was developed as a handgun cartridge.

Go with the Marlin rifle in my opinion.
 
Check out the EE. There is a Ruger model 96/44 for sale there. 44 calibre carbine with a detachable magazine. Looks like it is in great shape and the seller is looking for an offer. I would buy it but I just picked up a Deerfield a few months ago.
 
I'm a Marlin guy myself with a 1895G (45/70) and 1894 cowboy limited, (45colt). The 1894 is used mainly for plinking and cowboy action shooting. It sees a lot of rounds thru it (500 to 1000 rounds a month average) and no hicups to date. 90% of other CASS use Marlins for the same reason. Reliable.

I went to get a Puma but didn't like the fit and finish compared to the Marlin. Took home a 45-70 Guide Gun. Got seduced by the stainless. It always happens. Now if I want a matching pistol it's going to be as big as the rifle.
 
I hate Remington, and I hate the fact that they bought out Marlin. If it were me, I'd find a "pre-Remington" Marlin in .444 Marlin. Marlins are absolutely the best levers ever made. Since Remington bought them out, they're likely to be junk as all other Remingtons are. YOU HEAR THAT REMINGTON? YOU MAKE JUNK, IE 710, 770'S .....YOU ARE NOW A JUNK DEALER. Now only that, your older guns wouldn't shoot outta the box like a cheapo Savage would. Your guns needed special fitting and work to even compare to your competition like Winchester or Savage. Oh.....did I mention that I HATE REMINGTON. Another good example of your junk is the M597 which is a poor, poor attempt of copying Ruger's 10-22. Bahahahah what a laugh.

Pffffft.....rant over.

A nice lever gun is NOT stainless. A nice lever gun is blued, has a walnut stock. And a stock sleeve is made of leather, not cordura or spandex or whatever that synthetic material is. A nice lever gun is tube fed, not clip fed like a Browning or Savage. A nice lever gun is Western, fits in your saddle scabbard real nice and tucked in so as it doesn't get jerked out by tree branches when you amble through thick brush. This IS a real nice lever gun, that knocks 'em down with absolute authority such as this one did :wave:

I toatally understand your rant, luckily Remington hasen't interverted with Marlin in terms of its quality or its production. I have a couple friends at Marlin and they would be the first to let me know if anything was different or if policys had changed.. I too would hate to see a 710 version of a levergun, parish the thought, I couldn't take it.

i dont need anything fancy, stainless or engraveing like that.
just need somehting reliable that can put those big sucka round down range round after round.

Post 64 Winchesters M94's are JUNK!

Virtually everyone has a horror story about 1 or more firearms that they have owned. He's my lever horror story;

In '94 I was looking for a lever in .357 because I was doing alot of .357 shooting out of my M66 and wanted a cheap and easy round that I could reload in abundance. After looking around for about 6-8 months I couldn't find one, I even phoned Winchester! The nice lady said that they didn't have enough calls to start manufacturing them again. Remember this was before Cowboy Action got bigger.

I finally gave up on .357 and found a Winchester Wrangler in .44 Magnum. Shades of John Wayne that large loop lever was kewl! Little did I realize that with 2 years, I'd start shooting Cowboy Action. I did lots of testing and came up 7.2 grains of Unique pushing a 240 grain LSWC bullet as an accurate target load.

Within the first 20 rds down range, the pot metal feed ramp broke. Off for warranty work! Eight months later I get the rifle back. After every 50 rds the rear sight elevator would fall off. So we have to install a Williams rear sight! Shooting again after every 50 rds the screws in the receiver would work loose. Locktite!! After 1,500 rds the tubular magazine spring gave up the ghost! Wolfe Gunsprings to the rescue. After this the Lever Link broke, 3 months and 5 nasty letters later, Winchester told me they would sell me the part but without warranty! They wanted me to send the gun to the warranty centre again! Post 64 Winchester Levers are junk!!!!

That was the last straw, I found a sucker to buy the Winchester and bought a Marlin M1894S, after 8,000 rds through it, it broke a firing pin. I love the quality Marlin builds in. At 9,500 rds the back portion of the firing pin broke and I replaced it with a 1 piece firing pin. If your are a high volume shooter, Marlin is the only gun for you. Mind you I have a 1906 manufactured Winchester 92 re barrelled in .44 mag that is fantastic.

P.S. My Wrangler was one of 4 Wranglers in town with the same problems.
