Hey I'm looking to find a decent starter gun for myself. I'm looking to get into precision shooting and a decent caliber pistol for range shooting and I guess protection at home.
For rifles I'm thinking between .22 or .308 caliber and work up to .50. For the pistol I'm not sure. Price range I would say $300-$2000.
Everybody has to have a .22 in case of gopher attack since they generally show up by the hundreds out here.
Seriously though, get a .22 like a Ruger 10/22 or Remington 597, put a cheap rimfire scope on it and go shoot the barrel out of it. Doesn't get much more fun than that. If you buy the Remington you'll save enough to buy something else nice too that you can hunt big game with. I would recommend something like a Savage or Stevens in .270 topped with a nice Leupold VXIII scope or a Bushnell elite 4200.
If hunting isn't your game, then spend the money on a nice pistol in 9mm or .22 that you can learn to shoot on and later if you like it get something nice like a Sig 226 or STI 1911. Or, if you don't really like the pistols, get yourself an AR 15 or save your pennies and get a Swiss Arms classic green! That rifle alone could be your gopher getter too if you get it in the non restricted barrel length and it is a tack driver with almost no recoil--- truly sweeet!
