Hey I'm looking to find a decent starter gun for myself. I'm looking to get into precision shooting and a decent caliber pistol for range shooting and I guess protection at home.

For rifles I'm thinking between .22 or .308 caliber and work up to .50. For the pistol I'm not sure. Price range I would say $300-$2000.

I would say do a couple years of shooting before even thinking of getting a .50.

This one in my mind is a no brainer, start with a .22, probably looking at a semi auto cause they are loads of fun and cheap to shoot. The techniques you develop with this rifle can translate to bigger cal rifles down the road.

Personally, I started with a 30-06 and didn't get as much out of it as I thought, this is why I recommend the .22

Cheers

Everybody has to have a .22 in case of gopher attack since they generally show up by the hundreds out here. ;)
Seriously though, get a .22 like a Ruger 10/22 or Remington 597, put a cheap rimfire scope on it and go shoot the barrel out of it. Doesn't get much more fun than that. If you buy the Remington you'll save enough to buy something else nice too that you can hunt big game with. I would recommend something like a Savage or Stevens in .270 topped with a nice Leupold VXIII scope or a Bushnell elite 4200.
If hunting isn't your game, then spend the money on a nice pistol in 9mm or .22 that you can learn to shoot on and later if you like it get something nice like a Sig 226 or STI 1911. Or, if you don't really like the pistols, get yourself an AR 15 or save your pennies and get a Swiss Arms classic green! That rifle alone could be your gopher getter too if you get it in the non restricted barrel length and it is a tack driver with almost no recoil--- truly sweeet!

Mmm sounds ###y. Well then I guess that settles my start off. Gonna get mtgarld a .22 and go from there. My only thing is how do I know what to look for? I understand s fair amount about guns but have no idea what to look for or know manufactures. I can recognize the most common brands from military shooters lol.

Can;t go wrong with a ruger 10/22, everyone owns one pretty much, upgradable in almost every respect if thats your thing, shoot great and can be modified for accuracy.

I own one now and will never sell it.

For a 22 Ruger is the best of the bunch out of the box and can be tricked out easily. It will also hold up to huge amounts of shooting and the custom accessories are endless. For a bit biger caliber you can go like I did and get into a mauser m98 in 308 and/or enfield in 303. Both are solid guns and will last a long time or at least until you want to upgrade like I am doing as we speak. Good luck and happy shootin!!!!!!
Oh and as for gophers, last year I got 312 on one sunday alone. Thank God I have the heavy barrel and bipod!!!!!!!1 lmao:sniper:
