hey guys, I'm hoping you can help me out. I recieved my m14 today and was loading and unloading the (empty) 5 rd. magazine and noticed the magazine can be pushed forward and out without depressing the magazine release  So I'm thinking that this is no good, but I'm pretty new to the m14 game. So I thought I'd ask the experts before I call Marstar or start cleaning it.
thanks,

Ps This gun is a beast!

I'm just learning with my M14 also, but based on my experience, most gun related problems are related to dirt, fouling, or excessive grease/oil.

Personally, I can't say exactly how to fix your problem, but if you can see that there's alot of junk in the way of your magazine's path or catch, that'd be my first stab at solving the problem.

Is the front end of the magazine engaging properly? Hook the front end in first, then rock back until the magazine catch engages.

hmm, well there is cosmo still in and around the chamber and magazine well. I am going to call marstar and see what he says.

to explain my problem further, with the magazine in the gun, I wouldn't be able to feed cartriges into the magazine without pushing the magazine out and droping to the floor.

thanks for your input

EDIT: Yes Tiriaq, I am rocking the magazine in. I've looked at several m14 sites about loading the magazine, just can find anything on unloading

i think i see the problem, the magazine release is depressed while the magazine is sitting all the way up, so the little magazine catch is not holding it in. could it be the metal square on the mag was installed a little too low?

Marstar still isn't answering their phones, maybe it's their lunch break

Try filing down the little tab on the mag the engages the mag release. I had the same problem on a few of my mags, did a little filing and they all work. As you said the tab was likely spot welded a little off of spec. It's a quick and easy fix.

Had the same problem with one of my M305's I received in the previous Marstar batch. The mags would not seat as the lever was on a slight angle because the mag lever pin was too loose and would work itself half out after each shot.

The issue was cured with the very gracious help of Hungry. He replaced the rolled pin with a slightly larger one that fit snuggly. Problem solved.

Hungry told me that he picked up a 5/32" pin from Home Hardware and cut it to a length of about 5/8". The pins are so cheap you probably want to buy a couple and use the one that fits best. Note though, that Hungry said that the removal of the old pin and replacement is tricky and a second set of hands is invaluable.

Good luck.
