I am looking to buy a new .308 and i would like some feedback on what would be the best to get.

I will be doing most of my hunting in Northern Alberta

Westerners generally like boltguns. You too??

Remington SPS is a bolt gun. Comes in blued or stainless, and is a good deal.

I would give the nod to the Savage, or better yet the Stevens; it is the absolute best buy in bolt guns available today. For under $350.00, you can get a Stevens and have one of the most accurate off the shelf rifles in existence. No frills, cheapo synthetic stock, but who cares? It's how it shoots that counts, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
The 11F/11G is a step up, and has the accu-trigger and either a detachable mag or floorplate, and a bit better stock. (They are both made by Savage, BTW)
My pick though would still be the Stevens; light, handy, accurate and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Buy yourself a decent scope with the money you save. 'nuff said!

Figure out how much you want to spend on the rifle and the scope plus taxes. A grand isn't unusual. Then look at the Savages.

Ruger MKII stainless. It hasn't let me down yet!

stanway, how does that rear stock feel when you shoulder it? I dont think I have seen one like that before.

That is the 'older' style 'zytel' factory Ruger stock. I have a shell holder on the back part. The gun fits me perfectly and I have always liked the 'skeleton' stock - even with the hard rubber recoil pad.

:D

Best advice is to get behind a few different makes and models to see how the feel is. You will always shoot better with a rifle that feels right, regardless of the price tag. When you pick up a rifle that fits you properly, it will just point and feel ready to go. This is a very individual thing, several rifles that I thought dogs, because I have short little arms, are now trhe favourites of some of my knuckle-dragging buddies.

Also - figure out what features you want - As mentioned previously, you probably prefer a bolt... What about detachable mag?, iron sights? weight?
Dont be shy about buying a used rifle - most advances in new rifle manufacturing are economy driven!

Although I am hesitant to give advice to a "turd" ....:dancingbanana:

Don't even think about buying new till you handle a Tikka T-3. Without a doubt the T-3's are the best value/quality for your money. Compare them side by side to anything and you will see what I am saying.
They will most often outshoot anything in the price range right out of the box and have all the features including cold hammer forged free floated barrels, adjustable triggers, removable magazine and your choice of synthetic, wood or laminate stocks. And the smoothest action of most any factory rifle out there... and they are guaranteed to shoot an inch at 100yards.
Check them out before the one track minds talk you into less rifle for more money!:runaway:

I am an OLD badger, don't think much of a gimicky sheet metal trigger. A good three lever trigger will break cleaner than the Savage, and being made of solid blocks rathan sheet metal, will probably last longer. Savage got some very positive marketing hype going for what is essentially a safety trigger (those have been around for at least fifty years). don't get me wrong, I believe that the Savage is the best out of the box value in an economy priced rifle, but there is some truth in the notion that you rarely get more than you pay for.

As for a titanium rifle, so what? Another marketing gimmick, for most people. the few grams saved does not really justify the inflated cost unless you are going to be using it under some pretty extreme conditions. Similar to buying a Hummer to fetch the groceries!

These are my opinions, which are like piles, sooner or later, every ####### has a few. The big deal, as I stated earlier, is to buy something that feels right. There is no substitute for hands on. When you get your hands on a rifle that suits you, the recoil seems less, the targets seem bigger, it is like magic. Don't settle for hype, go for the magic!
