Newbie needs some help

HI Guys,

I recently bought a Savage 64 FXP 22LR. It is my first gun and I am just learning. Right now I am working with a scope. Problem is the scope continiously moves forward because of re-coil. Hoping someone can help me out and tell me how I can prevent this. I shoot a min. of 500 rounds at the range so my scope is all over the place.

Congrats on your first...like olives from a jar, the first one is tricky...the rest will come easy!

I adore my 64's...owned quite a few and, my 2nd rifle was(is...even after 25 years) a Cooey 64. I'm pretty sure you have regular dovetails on the FXP (I also have a newer Savage 64 in stainless...weaver bases)

I find, for scope mounting, a drop of locktite (I actually use crazy glue) on the screws will help to hold them fast. Use the kind that "breaks free" just in case you wish to change scopes at some point. Also, I have stripped rings (not bragging) by over torquing them..one that happens, new rings are in order.

Any additional information and/or pictures you can provide may help you to get better help.
 
Ditto on the loctite (the stuff in the blue bottle will "break free", the stuff in the red and green bottles is much more stubborn). I've heard using a torque wrench can make a big difference, but I've never gotten that far, the loctite usually does it for me.

The most important thing i do is put a tiny dab of clear silicone right in the dovetail where the scope base/saddle mounts to the dovetail on the rifle. This stops the sliding around effectively, which in turn helps to prevent the base mounting screws from working loose.
Put BLUE loctite on the base mounting screws and hand tighten them with a coin or stubby screwdriver if possible and torque them down as tight as you can, then wiggle the scope base quite roughly and then tighten it down some more, repeat until the base screw will no longer turn without stripping the threads. when you have both bases solid, slap on the scope and level the hairs perfectly, tighten down the rest and woila! when the loctite and silicone set up that scope will become your rifles new, smart, carry handle because those rings aint budging. and you should not have any more problems.
 
When using loc tite you don't need much. Just use a tiny dab.

Also do not over tighten your scope rings! You can damage your scope. Make them nice and snug.
