I've tried narrowing down this question, but google always changes my search from Lapua Mag to Win Mag. and I can't find a definitive answer. I'm brand new to precision shooting, and from what I've read so far, the 338 Lapua is an exciting cartridge for wanting to cover some ground. First off, 338 Lapua ammo is very scarce right now, as has been the case with many other cals., but since my rifle arrived, I've noticed for over 6 months, many places aren't even carrying 338 Lapua magnum at the moment.

Some retailers will advertise ammo as 338 Lapua and others as 338 Lapua Magnum. My rifle (no rounds even through it yet) is chambered in 338 Lapua Magnum. I'm wondering if 338 Lapua IS exactly 338 Lapua Magnum, and some people just drop the magnum part out of the name for convenience?

When I try to ask the goog, it always changes my question to 338 Lapua vs 338 Win Mag. when I intentionally want to ask about Lapua Mag. Would hate to buy something up due to such limited supply, and blow out a new rifle.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Yes, 338 Lapua and Lapua Magnum are the same. Few stores will stock the ammunition due to cost, availability, and the fact that broadly speaking, very few firearms owners shoot .338 Lapua compared to other long rang capable calibres.

@ Twan

Awesome, thank you so much! I figured that was likely the case. Having search results automatically switched to Win Mag and limited threads on the subject was casting some doubts. So many variations when its comes to cartridges.

Now fingers crossed I don't knock myself out the first time I fire the thing. :)

Looks like Hirsch has some in stock @ $85 for 10 rounds. For a brand new precision shooter I don't see to much practice in your future.

@maynard

Awesome, thank you! I'll have to give them a call and see how the shipping is. I snatched up basically anything I could get my hands on locally.

Highly over priced market the 338 Lapua round is in... much cheaper and as just as accurate choices out there...

Having been playing with the .338 Lapua for 22 years now, I have a favorite, the .300 PRC. It out paces the .338 at distance by quite a bit and does it with 15 grains less powder. Recoil is quite a bit less with the 225's compared to the 300gr.

Damn...never would have thought I'd hear that from PGW, made some of the best 338 Lap rifles in the world ;)
Any itch to get a 300 PRC production model rolling? That would be sweet...maybe in Direwolf platform.

OP what kinds of yards will/do you realistically have access to ?

Most ranges here in Saskatchewan (in the province where in most places you can see your farm dog 2 kilometers away at your neighbor's if you stand on a ladder) only go out to about 300 yards max.

We have our range in Nokomis which hosts F Class matches and (I believe) it goes out to 1.1 K ... but its never used.

.....regardless... unless you are shooting 1.5 K or more, you'd be better off getting a good custom built F Class style rifle and go with something like a 284 Win with match grade ammo (unless you reload).

We did a small batch of Timberwolf rifles in .300 PRC. The one I have is a 30" barrel and I have the 225's hitting 3100 with ease. The Direwolf is still in the hands of the classification people, going to celebrate the 2 year anniversary of that soon....

While I got your ear, any idea how I could score one of those SIMRAD top rings? Been looking everywhere with no luck.
