Newbie question about AR optics.

Yeah, I am going for a 16" barrel. I would love but can't afford an ACOG. I'm thinking of more of a CQC set up that still has a decent 300 Meter capability. I'll probably go with an Aimpoint and add the magnifier later if I feel I need it.

I've heard more than a few recommendations for the Aimpoint Micros. Are they really better than the M4 combat models? Why?

They're smaller and lighter. Other than that, not better. I use a compm4 because I can get a AA just about anywhere, anytime. Batteries break rarely, but they do, and the AA is just easier to source. Or you could just carry a spare CR2032 and not worry about it.
 
I just read a ton about it and the T-1 with a LaRue mount looks very cool. Not so bulky as the M4 but the M4 has a 2 MOA dot instead of a 4 like the Micro. Where do you guys find your best deals on this stuff?

LOL Barley, I'll have to live on white bread for a while and my wife will disown me but at least I'll have my Ar to cuddle with.

Way back when I first started looking the Acog was the "be all end all" but they are not cheap. Your probably right -about the price of the aimpoint magnifier and red dot together. The coolest one I saw had a red dot on top of it. Best of both worlds!!

My fave right now is Micro H1. I like it so much I'm getting another one.
 
Aimpoint Micro Owners ...

Which mount(s) are you using on your AR? I love to have a Larue but was told couldn't get them in Canada.

That's quite a list! Other that the fact that it's smaller and lighter why is the Micro your favorite? Or is it because it's just as good as the M3 M4 and it's smaller and lighter?
 
How are the ACOG's for up close stuff? I don't imagine with the magnification that you can shoot with both eyes open (hence the model with the red dot on top).

It's based on a concept called the Bindon method.
You're supposed to use both eyes open close up, focusing on the target with the non-magnified eye..the other eye picks up the circle/chevron,etc.
Trijicon actually runs schools to teach the method, as the ACOG is the new standard optic for the Marines.

I currently have: CompML3 2MOA X 2
Micro H-1 4MOA in a Larue mount
ACOG TA31F also Larue mounted
Nightforce XSX 1-4X...Larue, 'natch!
I have had, and let go, the Aimpoint M4, as well as a S&B Short Dot, and the
Micro series,IMHO, is the best 'solution' for a CQB optic.
The only 'fly in the ointment' is the stock mount for the Micro's....
It ( H-1) doesn't look like much for the money, but it delivers what I'm looking for!
