Okay, this must be a stupid question but I do not know the answer.

I circled what I am talking about. Is this a slide lock or safety/slide lock combo? I am under the impression it is used just to keep the slide from being pulled back. but why? what is the purpose of that, and how is it a safety feature? btw, I realize the proper name is not "slidelock"...

I feel stupid asking it... but I really have no idea.

Just in case you were wondering, blocking the slide is handy as it doesn't come out of battery when you holster.

Nice feature. I have to thumb ride my Glock in every time.

Although I've not heard of the the term "battery" in this context I think I got the gist of what you mean. What kind of holster do you have? I was using one of those plastic ones (G22) and lock in around the trigger, can't remember the name right now. I stopped using it after I noticed I was getting some nasty holster wear.

battery- slide or bolt fully forward, locking lugs enguaged, ready to fire- out of battery- slide or bolt slightly to the rear, clocking lugs not enguaged, ready to KA-BOOM
