newbie question about loading 40

I am going to star to load 40 S&w using 180 grain plated bullets but i dont know what powder to buy i have a realoading book but was justwondering if anybody can give me a recipe that they have had sucsess with. Should i be using a fast powder or a slow powder any help would be great thanks

Titegroup or Clays

Depends what you are loading for. I use Clays for IPSC 40 minor. If you want to work near the higher end Maybe titegroup or even longshot.

I use International Clays for my SV pistol with 180gr bullets. It measures nice and for getting PF170 you need around 4.6-7gr and OAL 1.165-170"
Tightgroup is another excellent choice.

i dont need to make power factor i dont compete yet just want something accurate for the range

Bullseye or Bluedot would be my first 2 choices for .40. Bluedot works very well in 10mm, so it stands to reason it should work well in .40.

for major loads i like power pistol and the old stand bye 231 - for minor loads i like clays

By plated bullets do you mean Frontier CMJ? I use these with Hodgdon Clays. As for data, I was told by the vendor to use 180 FMJ loads, as the plating on the Frontiers is thick. I usually load .2 grains below max, just incase my powder measure dishes out a heavy charge.

they are wolf 180gr plated so sould i use fmj data or lead data

I currently run 4.6gr of Titegroup under Aim 180gr plated projectiles.

Brass is mainly Speer/Win and primers are a mixture of Win, Fed, CCI...

2-3 inches offhand, at 15m, is plenty accurate for the application I use (ODPL).

I tried to make major with Clays. When I got to 3.6 and was still only getting a power factor in the 140s I stoped. 5.0gn of 231 will work well since you aren't concerned about power factor.

HP 38 or 231. with 3.7 OAL 1.125 lead works great for me.

A great powder for many handguns is IMR SR4756... I have used it for 9mm, 40 and 45.. If you go the Hodgdon website you can find lots of different loads for various powders they produce...

UNIQUE from Alliant Powders is SUPER versatile, good for all handguns and shotguns as well! Not to mention CHEAP. Around $25 for 1 pound (almost 1000 rounds or 7000 grains)
