Hi, Son and I are planning to get into black powder this yr. with an eye towards primitive weapons seasons. Can anyone recommend a good book? I've been around guns/reloading/htg all my life, as has my son, but we are complete newborns when it comes to this.
Also, we're admiring the Traditions Hawkins Woodsman .50 cal. percussion rifles. Good choice for deer using nosler sabots? They've a 1 in 48 twist. Accurate and effective to 100-150 yds (with practice)? Thanks in advance.

Sam Fadala has a few bp books out with tons of info. If your taking the traditional route why the Nosler's? Why not a good 'ol patch & round ball or better yet a conical. I'll bet you and your Son would enjoy doing some bullet/ball casting together not saying the Noslers are'nt any good, but they can be pricey. XTP's are a cheaper route and they can be bought in bulk as well as sabots. 150yds can tend to a long shot with primitive open sights, I'd practice out to 50yds 1st.

I will second the book by Sam Fadala, and using round balls or conicals. It just fits with the style you are looking at for a rifle. My wife has a Traditions and I have a Lyman Trade rifle, and the Lyman is a far better rifle in my opinion and no more money. Check out Wholesale Sports, they have the Lymans. Also would like to suggest that you set up so that shots are 100 yards or less, and practic a bunch. Good luck and have fun.
 
x3 for Mr. Fadala's book. I have an older edition and it is a great reference.

I would also vote for shooting patched round ball if you want to go traditional. For shots under 100 yards they are remarkable effective.
 
x 2 for setting up for 100 yd. shots or less. Unless your going to scope that gun, a 100 yd. grouping for starters with open sights is a good start. Also if you know someone or a club in your area ask for advice. Most people I know who started muzzleloading and quit were frustrated with it. With a bit of knowhow it's easy and lots of fun.
 
I have a tc hawken and hav it poppin pretty good groups at 75. I think the conditions would have to be right for me to go to 100.
They are great fun to shoot.

I have Sam Fadalas book as well. Its great.
 
x ??? for Fadala. There is also some CGN'rs that are hard core traditional guys (Ben Hunchack for one) who won't steer you wrong.

Thanks guys, will be ordering a book tomorrow. Most of our shots with rifles have been under 100 yds anyway. The patch and ball will be great, I just wanted to be sure of a clean kill.
18 yr old son and I were planning out our '08 draws and hunts yesterday, I showed him what and where we could be drawn and our options; asked him what his hunting preferences were, his reply, "as much as possible".
This is gonna be a blast! Gotta love time with your kids.
