In the early days of benchrest shooting, high powered scopes were not commonly available. 20 power was a very high powered scope and many shot with 10x scopes. The square then was the aiming point since it worked better with the scopes of the day. I know it worked pretty good with the 6-18 Redfield I started out with. Nowdays 36x scopes are normal and some use up to 50x so the square has become superfluous but it is still there; just in case, I guess! Regards, Bill
