newbie question: what is this sqaure for?

there is a black squre on top of the rings. what is it for?

In the early days of benchrest shooting, high powered scopes were not commonly available. 20 power was a very high powered scope and many shot with 10x scopes. The square then was the aiming point since it worked better with the scopes of the day. I know it worked pretty good with the 6-18 Redfield I started out with. Nowdays 36x scopes are normal and some use up to 50x so the square has become superfluous but it is still there; just in case, I guess! Regards, Bill

At 200 yds the mirage can be quite fierce (eg. Holton Michigan). The aiming rings can disappear, even with a 36X or plus scope. Then one is happy to have the square as an aiming point when seeing conditions get rough.

Write the number of grains loaded in you case that was shot at the target.
