I want to take my first excursion into black rifles. Ideally, I would like an AR M15-A4. However, I am not keen on owning a rifle that I can shoot only at the range. So, I was also considering the AR 180B.

Here's my question - is the 180B significantly different than the restricted AR15's? If I get the 180B, am I missing out on something important or settling for less?

I've never owned an AR15 myself, simply cause of that fact that if I can't hunt with it I don't want it, but my AR-180B was the best purchase I ever made. Very fun to shoot and I like that I can take it out in the bush whenever I want for some fun. The lower is very similar to the AR15. Same trigger assembly and mag well, but the upper and gas system is completely different.

My only gripe with the 180B is the price we pay in Canada for them. They retail for $550US, if they were more in line with this in CAD I think everyone in Canada would have one.
AR180B is no AR15 though........

You can look at it this way.

like the rem 700 vs savage 10fp, pretty close in functionality. There are a whole lot more aftermarket accessories for the AR. The onlydownside, and it is a big one is that the AR is restricted, no hunting and all the bull#### rules that go along with restricted apply.

My biggest problem with the AR15, besides being restricted, is the direct gas system. I much prefer the piston upper.

Do not buy an AR180B thinking you are getting a non-restricted AR15, you will only disapoint yourself. That being said, the 180B is a great little utility rifle.

If Armalite would make a metal lower and chrome line barrels, they would have a sweet little rifle that in my opinion would rival the AR15.

I come to the Conclusion that the AR-180B must Be a very enjoyable rifle as it seems that a few folk here on CGN own them, also the Fact that I never see any for sale in the EE on the site. Also Wolverine is always sold out of them.

So either Wolverine is buying 4 rifles at a time and 10 people in Canada own them only would explain it or folks don't want to part with them. if that makes any sense.

Riflemen actually buy Swiss, but that's another argument...

I bet you will have just as much fun with an AR-180B as anyone does with their Mattel-15's, or probably more, as you can take it camping, hunting, whatever...

For the money, the only thing that would be close is a Norinco-15, and I can't ever do one of those after being so terribly disappointed by another Norinco product I purchased.

The AR-180B looks like a great compromise, and I too am strongly in favour of a gas piston!

Of course, take my opinion with a grain of salt... I won't ever own an AR-15, because I hated them so MUCH when I was issued one by Her Majesty. I'm still in counselling, but slowly the nightmares are becoming less frequent.

I love mine - I'm not selling it ever - unless I hear a qualified rumor it is going to be sent restricted.

I strap mine to my quad front rack and giver #### - and I dont ride slow - it is an "AR" a solid reliable mil spec design that will shoot better than you do. from chickens to gophers to coyotes, bringin my black rifle is half the fun of a quad trip.

AR-180B's are non'restricted +++ so are the VZ-858s, with those two on the market, I'd put my money there first before the true AR-15. I think you'd have more fun.

mobility ... and the schedule of shooting where and whenever you want...
