I am just getting into reloading and I have a question about bullet seating.
I wanted my seating depth to be 3.31 OAL but I set the die up to crimp as well. I never pressured the press enough to crimp the bullet but my seating depth is 3.284. Would this be a factor. I loaded the cartridges from a Lyman manual and the OAL of theirs was 3.25. Should I pull the bullets and reseat them?

The only reason I was going to use 3.31 is because the factory Winchester 130 grain 270's measure that. I need that or less to fit in my magazine.

Thanks for any help

I did find the OAL of my gun to be 3.43. That is where the bullet contacted the lands. Does this help anything.

My mag cycles well with 3.31. Not sure how much longer I can make them without any problems. Is there a pressure difference the closer to the lands you get? I have been reading conflicting information about this.

The further out of the case you seat the bullet the less pressure in the case, but 0.05 of an inch isn't gonna make a huge difference. Remeber there are 3 factors to play with here. You are gonna have to do alot of testing to get everything right. If you just want loads that will cycle then try as best to duplicate a factory loads dimensions, and use published load data. For accuracy you have to test the charge weight, the seating depth, and even the crimp. All of these will add up to get you some real accuracy. It is not a really quick process.

You are getting some bad info here.

DO NOT just load the max and experiment with length. Max in the book is max for their rifle. Your can be quite different. That is why they list a STARt load. Hopefully, Start won't be too hot. twice I have found that to be the case.

In a rifle, the closer to the rifling, the HIGHER the pressure. Touching the rifling makes for a substantial boost. Your mag length sets the bullet a long way off the rifling. See if you can find an accurate load at that length you have now.

If not, you could experement by starting at touching, and moving back in 10 thou increments, to 30 thou off.
