I am not new to firearms by no means, but I am new to the "black rifle" thing. I am just wondering where it is legal to use an AR? Do I need a permit everytime I go to use it?

I also have a question about parts. Is a restricted class PAL needed to buy AR parts, and also, do I register a gun after it is built and can fire, or before I begin to build? I am sorry, I am new to the restricted firearms business...:confused: Thanks guys!

A "restricted" firearm like an AR can only be used at a range that is approved for that use, the same way that a handgun is; once purchased, your provincial CFO will issue an Authorization To Transport (ATT) that allows you to to take it to/from the range, and an ATT is normally good for either one or three years (depending on the length of your membership in your club). Other than the receiver (which is "the gun" for legal purposes), AR parts are uncontrolled, the same way that a spare shotgun barrel is.
 
however some vendors still wont sell you uncontrolled parts without proof of a PAL. Which I think is a good idea.
 
First I've heard of that. I've never been asked for my PAL for parts purchase - although I have been asked for my Dealer's Licence when the manufacturer is concerned about safety and liability issues. What vendors might those be?
 
Back to mdbuckle's question - if you want to assemble an AR from parts, the lower receiver will be registered when you buy it. Doesn't matter if its the last part you buy, or the first. Don't assume that you can assemble an AR from parts for less money than if you buy a complete rifle.

Questar won't import parts without a PAL. Their rational is they need an end user on the US Export permit. While I don't like it, I can accept his reasons. I can take comfort in that his operation is small and controlled, so the security of my information isn't at issue.
 
Although it may seem abit extreem..I would go as far as to say that you should show your PAL at the door to even get into gun shops...Its better security for us in the long run..
 
If you want go info on building your own AR15...go to AR15.com those guys will give you some solid advice...

It is extreme, too extreme.

What if some one doesn't have a PAL? A gunshop would be the most logical place to find out about getting one. You don't need a liscence to enter bars so you shouldn't need one to enter a store.

You guys need to give your heads a shake.

maybe out your way...it would be to extreme...but some gunshops around here armed robbery is concern..not to mention scum getting their hands on the ammo purchasing lists...Most shops Ive been to have buzz in 2 part entry doors.. In metro areas....this could make some sense..perhaps out your way..it would be stupid overkill..?
 
I dont have a big problem with freedom at all...Have you visited some of the happier neighborhoods in inner cities recently? If you owned a gunshop there..you might have second thoughts...

Freedom could also be enough security so that the owner could enjoy his workday and be able to go home at night in one piece?
 
What are you from the hood in toronto? That is crazy extreme. Opening a gun shop in a neighborhood like that is like George W. opening up a campaign HQ in Fallujah...
 
lol..c'mon sort of like selling liquor in the ghetto...I use to go to one old Italian gun shop in TO...in real #### area...theres a few others..The one I go to know out in my area..has double doors..with buzzer...
 
I think were getttin off track here. Buckle dude, go get yourself an AR than apply for the ATT and your set. You can shoot away. Where you located?
