Total newbie here. This was probably covered in a forum thread somewhere but I'm finding a lot of stuff pertaining to CQB.

I have a few questions regarding getting set up to do service rifle. I particularly want to shoot competitions.

I am getting my kit together and I have a few questions regarding basic essential gear:

1.) What are people using to carry their mags and other stuff?

2.) How many mags do I need? (minimum and ideally)

3.) Is there anyone out there using iron sights and are there any recommendations to a good set of irons?

Thanks, your input and time is very much appreciated :)

For Service Rifle with the ORA, see post #3 HERE

For shooting the NSCC matches (OSA, NCRRA) see a description for the matches and equipment http://www.dcra.ca/service_conditions.php

To carry mags? - tac vest, chest rigs, belt pouches - what ever works for competitors

How many mags? - for NSCC, min 3 5-round mags I believe. For ORA, see the equipment list in the link above.

Iron sights? I have not seen anybody with Irons for SR....but I am new to the sport too. Magnified optics (4-10 max power) seems to be the most common from what I have seen and read.

For SR:
Scope = 1-4x scope, range is from 100-500m, too much power hinders shots at moving targets.
Mags = 4 mags min is required per match stage, because you usually shoot up to 20 rounds per match stage. Ideally it's best to have 10 mags, that way you are not running around to prep for your next match and you have spares if failures occur.
Carry gear =
(A) light vest or equipment belt, to carry mags.
(B) A small back-pack to carry bug juice, sun screen, head gear, light rain jacket, water, snacks, ear protection & eye protection. I carry this with me to the butts, that way I have water and stuff.
(C) Ammo can for ammo, spare mags & cleaning stuff. I leave this behind at the shooting position.

ORA uses the CFSAC CofF with a short range match 25-10 yards. I agree with Furet about the scope. The powers I mentioned were referring to the upper end of a variable scope. I have used a spotting scope in the past to see target markers at 500 when zeroing. I am going to try my bino's this coming weekend to save weight. I have a pouch I can keep them in for the run down so I think this will work out fine. Fingers crossed. :)

I carry water in hydration pack and an admin pouch for many of the small bits mentioned. Ammo and everything else is left in my kit bag near the firing point.

ORA CofF requires a load out of up to 58 rounds for any of the 4 stages so more mags are required for what we do than the NSCC course of fire. We can also use LAR mags to full capacity which can be helpful on certain stages.

Ok great! I really appreciate your responses :) Very helpful.
To my understanding there are some differences in the match structure when it comes to the matches conducted at the canadian service conditions championship vs the ORA matches right?

Don't know where in ON you are, but there is a NSCC course of fire SR competition being hosted by www.osacanada.ca at MilCun this coming weekend. MilCun is between Kinmount & Minden. If you are in Central ON, you could drop by. Matches 1-16 will be fired over two days.

Oh yes, I forgot..... the all important writing tool....... the PEN! actually bring 2.

Also forgot about the spotting scope or good bino's for scoring the deliberate shots at 300m (thanks Bolivar).
