Been Practising my skills with remington 700 5r .223 from back of friends pick up truck in prone posistion.

Next time was thinking of bringing my wagon out and shooting from back of it when seats are folded down. MY stupid question is with the windows inside car is there any risk of shattering one? since gun will be all in car except end of barrel. Not sure how much damage the sound or shockwave could cause. My gut says it wouldnt be issue but would look pretty stupid if it was.

Is there a calibre at which it might become issue? 12 gauge shotgun? .308 rifle? 50cal sniper rifle?

Am hoping someone on here owns something other then a pick up truck and has some first hand knowledge. Not a huge fan of lying on gravel roads if i dont have to.

Why not pick up a shooting mat, or cheap camping mat and shoot off the ground? Even with the muzzle outside the car I bet it'd be loud as hell!

BTW, I've seen lots of pics of guys shooting out of the bed of pickups, etc. and I had always wondered whether this was an accepted practice even though I understood it to be against the rules.

How can you expect to shoot precisely from a platform that by design sits on air filled tires attached to springs?
A vehicle moves, so therefor so will the shooter.
There are also potential legal issues that may come into play as well.

Serious precision shooting is done from benches that have heavy steel legs cemented into the ground and the bench top is also made of concrete in order to attain the most stable platform available. Alternately prone shooting can also offer good precision, but only on "terra FIRMA"

cant imagine what difference it makes if you laying in back of truck or on the ground? as far the law goes. I should point out that this is on crown land miles from people, usually on blocked or dead end abandoned logging roads.

Good point alberta tactical, but i didnt really feel truck was moving since we were prone on mat in back and cause of the fairly low calibre. But i could be wrong. The slight elevation of truck also made lining up with our targets a bit easier.

Perhaps ill just have to double up on mats if im gonna be laying on rough gravel road. onlike alberta not alot of flat soft grass hills to lay on or even ground.

Well, for instance, in Alberta it is illegal to:

7) have a loaded firearm (live ammunition in breech, chamber or magazine) in or on, or discharge a weapon from
  • a boat unless the boat is propelled by muscular power or is at anchor and the person is hunting, or
  • any kind of aircraft or vehicle whether it is moving or stationary.

This is from the hunting regs and shouldn't affect you when target shooting, but it wouldn't be the first time a LEO misapplied a section of law. That is why several replies have mentioned the legality of it.

hmm yeah not hunting. But certainly see where law is coming from. You would hope if you were pretty well established like chairs set up and targets laid out you would be ok.

I like rake idea to clear a flat spot. I have looked at mats and was suprised by how many have straps or folds in such a way that you could never have a clean side you would always end up rolling or folding a dirty/muddy side onto top clean side. Be nice to find one that like the two outer quarters folded into middle half then rolled up so that mat stayed clean. anyone got a suggestion?

Get a mat to put the mat on. ;)

Get a shooting table built( in a triangle shape). It isn't too heavy, will be a lot more solid and LEGAL. There is no way on earth you can do precision shooting from a vehicle( which is moving whether you realize it or not).It will move differently each time just upon recoil.

there is no issue shooting targets from a stationary vehicle but it has safety problems since nobody can see what you're doing and you can't see others around you. as to windows, roll them down. i know mats can be a pain because you can't see anything with bush and weeds in front of you. you can knock together a reasonable shooting bench

Had spotter beside truck. I wish there was more grassy hills but its all rough forestry land around me on west coast. Hard to find level spot to lie prone. May have to look into bench idea. I feel like ive seen some fold up camping ones before but they might be a bit flimsy.

Lots of good advice here. I really, really would discontinue shooting from a truck bed - it won't be good for accuracy and will attract unnecessary attention if seen.

In BC, the Wildlife Act prohibits firing from a motor vehicle. You will have trouble from the CO's if they stumble across you shooting from a vehicle - even if it is only for target practice. Get a mat and shoot that way. Way better than paying a ticket.
