Hey everyone, first timer to canadian gun nutz and looking forward to deer season.
Just finished playing with some SKS upgrades.
It's a Russian SKS in an ATI stalk with adjustable cheek rest. It has a UTG 9-12 inch tactical bipod and a Bushnell 6-24 by 50 mil mag scope mounted on a Wartak scope rail. I know the scope is way to big for this gun and it is actually intended for my not yet purchased Rem 700, but I got such a good deal on the scope I thought I would play with it on the SKS.
I'll input some pictures as soon as I figure out how to do it on an iPad.

Thank for the heads up.
The cheaper scope mounts tend to rattle the scope around and not stay true, but the Wartak scope rail actually mounts from ontop of the existing receiver and connects to the rear sight so it seems to hold zero pretty well.

I will probably swap the 6-24 scope with something a bit smaller like a 1-6 scope, but like I said I have this scope now so why not use it right.
Thanks for the comment.

Not the biggest fan of the ATI stock, An archangel would be more solid. And what everyone else said about the scope.
looks like it would be a fun bench shooter though.

good job, looks good

like the job you did, purists of course will nock your efforts, but yeah, I would say get some lower rings....myself, I have a 1-6 power scope...good enough for the sks. I het two and a half to three inch groupings at about 140 yards....surplus ammo. Don't expect to much from the sks though

WHAT IN F@CK IS DONE TO THIS POOR RIFLE? STUPID HICK WITH TEN GALLON HAT AND GIANT PICKUP TRUCK LOOKS AT PERFECTLY FINE SIMONOV KARBIN AND SAYS "NO, RIFLE NEED MORE DUMB SH*T ON IT"? WHAT IS REASON FOR PISTOL GRIP? IF YOU NEED TO FIRE FROM HIP IN EMERGENCY, NOW HAND IS TWISTED INTO PAINFUL ANGLE AND YOU MISS EVERY ENEMY! LOOK AT WRONG ANGLE OF BAYONET! LOOK AT CHEAP PLASTIC MAGAZINE THAT FEEDS CARTRIDGE LIKE CONSTANTLY JAMMING PEZ CANDY BOX! WHERE DID CLEANING STICK GO?
IS PROUD DESIGN OF SERGEI SIMONOV. THIS IS LIKE SENDING HIM BIRTHDAY CARD WITH SEVERED OFF THUMB OF DAUGHTER IN ENVELOPE. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY SERGEI! I PISS ON ALL YOU CREATE!" LARGE MOUND FORMS OVER SIMONOV'S GRAVE BY CONSTANT TUMBLING OF HIS ANGRY CORPSE. IS FAULT OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU.
RIFLE WAS FINE BEFORE YOU F@CK IT. NOW IS TRASH. MAYBE YOU CHECK IN GARAGE AND ORIGINAL BOLT EDIFICE AND WOOD ARE STILL THERE. MAYBE IS NOT TOO LATE TO KEEP RIFLE SOMETHING NOT SHAMEFUL TO TAKE TO FIRING RANGE. TAKE SH*T OF GOAT AWAY AND COULD STILL BE GOOD WEAPON. http://www.m1-garand-rifle.com/ivan-chesnokov.php
In all seriousness, it's your rifle: Do with it as you please. But you'll probably end up like me, and regret putting money into attempts at "improving" a rifle that was designed for peasant conscripts. .

I really quite enjoyed that rant from Ivan Chesnokov. He seems very offended and quite honestly, emotionally invested in all things Russian especially firearms, and from the sound of his broken English text I can appreciate his patriotism, however. The truth is, I have kept everything that originally came with this gun. The wood stock however had a far too short length of pull that made shooting it unpleasant. Whereas the adjustable stock allows for near exact length of pull. The bayonet though nice to look at has no practical use at the range or if the gun is to be used as a cheaper hunting rifle, it just adds excessive weight. This was just a fun and relatively cheap little project. Modifying an SKS is no different than modifying a car to suit the driver who payed the money to own it. I think Sergei Simonov would care about as much as Henry Ford would about a modified F150.
But thanks for posting that, it was pretty funny.

Its ok BrotherInArms , some people on this forum are wacko's.
Attacking another user like that should also land people banns.
Likely he has never used a SKS with a replaced ATI Stock either, The Pistol grip and selectable length but-stock makes shooting them in a shooters position much better , perhaps not a hip fire position (lol how is that even a argument).
I kept my personal SKS with the wood furniture and i like that too but I have shot my good friends Tapco bubba'd setup quite a few times and its very comfortable to shoot , Esp with the Grip-pod he put on it, It really does work at the range.

As far as rings go yes those are obviously too high but it looks like those rings and scope were for another rifle your waiting on.

Obviously you want to always keep the scope as low to the gun as possible for best cheek weld and consistency.

Have fun.

Thanks for the post.
The rings that are on it now are actually quite cheap and came with a rifle I purchased a couple of years ago, but were the only ones I have available at the moment.

Right on. You seem to appreciate the rant from I.Chesnokov in the humorous spirit I had intended. I didn't mean to attack you at all. The link I put at the end of the quote leads to a page about his firearms philosophy. I believe he's a fictional character made up to rant at people on the internet. It's worth a chuckle at least. Usually you can expect some people to be greatly offended that you did *A thing* to something you own and posted about it on the internet. I agree with you about the length of pull on the SKS. Somehow it just doesn't fit my 5'14" frame properly! I did much the same to my SKS, but in the end wasn't very happy with what I ended up with. I eventually returned it to original condition and just learned to be happy with what it was. It's not like you're doing irreversible modifications to some super rare collectors piece. The serious point I think I was roundabout trying to get to is to keep in mind what you're doing, what you expect to get out of it, what the base rifle is actually capable of and how much you're spending on it. You wouldn't want to be the guy constantly bumping your WTS add on the EE, desperately trying to recover the $thousands you spent building a "Custom Sniper Glass Bedded Free Floated Detachable Mag Pistol Gripped SKS" that nobody in their right mind would buy.

Tl;Dr - Enjoy the I.Chesnokov humor, Enjoy tinkering, Enjoy your rifle

I really like the Russian SKS. I kept mine stock all but the sights. I changed them out to peep style, by tech sights. I'm shooting 1-1.5 MOA up to 150 meters pretty consistently with surplus ammo. This is bench rest shooting. I find the SKS to hold about the same level of accuracy and down range terminal velocity as my 30-30 winchester. Call it what you want, that's how mine is working and I'm pretty happy
