I am intersted in getting into black powder firearms. Does anyone have a recomendation for a cheap first firearm to get into this class? Thanks.

I would suggest a Thompson Center Hawken Percussion Rifle. They can be found used for around $350.

Get yourself the Lyman Black Powder Digest and read it cover to cover, AND find somebody else who is into BP to show you the ropes. It isn't rocket science, but it does need some thinking about.

There are gazillions of movies on YouTube- many of them VERY good. Mike Beliveau [duelist] has posted some great stuff, and has hickock45.

before you buy any gun, I would suggest going to your local fish and game club and see what the black powder shooters there are using. Chances are they will offer you a shot with their guns. It gives you a chance to look at some of the different varieties and decide what kind you like best. They also should be a good hands on source of how to do things.
Where about do you live?

As suggested get to know some other black powder shooters to secure a supply of black powder, most gun shops don't have it because of special storage requirements.

Thanks guys. There is a black powder night at my range in Burlington Ontario. Was able to take a few shots and fell in love lol.

Caution, BP can be addictive. You have been warned!
:D

Lots of knowledgeable BP shooters here on CGN so don't be timid about asking questions. Oh ya, +1 on the Lyman Black Powder Handbook & Loading Manual.
