I'd like some suggestions on the best type of gun to start myself out on and how to learn etc. I'm a single female living alone where I don't know anyone so I'm looking for some protection as well as fun. The down side of not knowing anyone is that I have no one here to teach me the basics on a borrowed gun. I plan on taking a safety class and how to handle a gun under pressure, but I would think it would be best if I had a familiarity with a few different weapons before choosing what I want. I also would think it would be best to have a little bit of familiarity with whatever gun I choose to start out on before I take a class (or at least the handling under pressure course). I'm not sure exactly what order I should do this all in. I have very limited experience with guns (I've shot pellet guns and a colt 45 before). Any advice at all would be helpful.

Thanks

There should be a list of instructors and ranges in your area. There should be some type of intro pistol defense class. In taking a course like that they should have a number of different firearms for you to try.

Spokane is in the USA.
For home defense and casual target shooting, any decent quality handgun that doesn't have excessive recoil and fits your hand will be fine.
Sounds like there are courses in your neighbourhood, get as much hands on experience as you can an you will be fine.
Have fun!

You can always stop by Cabela's in Post Falls, ID, about 20mi east of Spokane, to handle any of the guns in their extensive inventory, to ask questions and find out about local stooting clubs and courses that may fit your needs too.
It's a new and very nice store, been there a year ago :D

Take the course first. You'll get exposure to a variety of firearms and be taught proper gun handling procedures. From there you will get a sense where you might want to go next. And maybe meet some folks with similar interests you can pursue together.
Self and home defense is serious business. Just shooting can be a lot of fun and can hone your skills.

Thanks Guys!

Thank you for all the suggestions and advice it was very helpful. I'm going to go with the class first since they will allow me to handle a variety of guns which will enable me to find the best fit.
