Newbie....What do you recommend?

The process to follow when buying a new precision rifle:

Step 1: Figure out what you want (Hunting, Tactical, Benchrest, or Hybrid)
Step 2: Figure out what Projectile (Bullet) you want to shoot (diameter and weight if possible)
Step 3: Assign a Calibre to that specific projectile (6.5mm bullet? Choose between 6.5x55, .264Win, 6.5x284 ect...)
Step 4: Do you want custom or factory?
Step 5: Do you want new or used?
Step 6: Order firearm or browse the EE to no end!
Step 7: Get into reloading!!!

I started on the .223 and love it! So accurate and cheap. Not to mention easy to find! Also has an almost unlimited barrel life.

Buy the scope used if possible, and dont spend more than $1000 on optics (unless you're rich or something!). You can always upgrade optics later. Upgrading the rifle is kinda hard.

$2000 is my limit with optics. It is possible. lol I've been looking at used Tikka T3 super varmint and Tikka M595's. I like the new Tikka sporter with the laminate.

Bellveille? There is an active Target Rifle club on the Kingston base. Join the ORA. Kingston is a very nice 600 yard range. Go there, talk to the guys and borrow a rifle.

What you want is a good used target rifle. It will be a solid action and well bedded.

223 or 308 shoot about the same to 1000 yards.
