Hey there, I am new to this site and new to the idea of reloading. I was wondering what I would need to get started reloading 308's, 9mm's, .45acp, 30-06 and 12 guage. What are some of the terms I would need to become fermiliar with? How much should I expect to spend if I wanted a decent set up for both new and used?
 
The very first thing you need to do is go buy a reloading manual and read it ..... TWICE!

It doesn't really matter which manual you choose. They are all good. Go for the one with the prettiest picture on the front. :)

That manual will answer all your questions and get you started on the reloading road.
 
Suputin is exactly right, start by reading. A great book that i suggest all new reloaders buy is call "ABC's of reloading" this book explains everything you need to know from terms, to how to set things up, as well as everything you will need. I still refer to this book even after now, of reloading for 5 years. great great book. If you have any questions about reloading, feel free to throw me a message.
 
Just a heads up reloading shot shells are a whole different ball game than reloading brass cartridges. ;)

But as stated do some reading as there is a fair amount to take in. In general for brass the procedure is as follows:

1) size brass/remove primer(on press)
2) trim/inspect brass for defects/wear and tear/clean brass(if you want)
3) prime brass
4) load powder charges
5) seat bullet/crimp

You'll want to learn all the variables in each step. One of the hardest parts of reloading is picking a powder to use and bullets to use. Really just pick one and adjust as you feel the need.

Also there are many threads on where to start with equipment. Just browse around the last week or two..I know I posted in a few of them already.
 
Agreed with the above. One of the best best introductions and overviews to and of reloading is ABCs, but it has not much by the way of 'recipes'. All of the major component manufacturers put out good manuals and these do have the load data.

Just about all rifle and pistol cartridges can be reloaded on the same press with the purchase of calibre-specific dies and perhaps shell holders. Shotguns require different equipment.

Do some reading and check back, because anything we say here will make more sense once you have done your basic info upload.

lol but then you have to decide how much you want to invest in your reloading equipement? Single stage press or Progressive? How often do you shoot/want to shoot?

I am at the saving money for a progressive Dillon 550 stage :D
 
another new reloader

I just started reloading a while back. Its been fun, have learned tons - fast.
Good comments from the others... especially the comments on reading. Do lots. Would add to that checking out online sources - reviews on equipment, etc. Even youtubes of guys actually setting up and reloading with different equipment. It'll all help you decide whats right for you.

One thing to pass along based on the calibers you want to reload:

I learned FAST that there's more to reloading rifle cartridges (sizing neck/shoulder, case length/trimming, etc) vs reloading a simple pistol caliber like a 9mm. I don't do enough rifle shooting to bother with reloading those calibers, but I do a good bit of handgunning - and that totally influenced my reloading hardware selection. You'll have to focus on what fits your needs best.

Another good place to start on ammo recipes is on the powder manufacturer's sites... Alliant, Hodgdon, etc.

One thing I will say... its an addictive hobby. Good Luck!
