As a newbie hunter (Hunted last November only) I have realized that there are a few surefire ways of spotting game.

I hope this guide will help some of the other newbie hunters out there.

First off you MUST leave the city. I know, it seems strange that you can go downtown and hunt Cougar all night, but Deer apparently are less social than Cougar's and do not like the city life.

Secondly, you will NEVER see a Deer while traveling slowly down a FS road or through a cut block on the way to your "favorite spot" or while doing a little road hunting on your way out of the bush. The absolute minimum speed for spotting deer on any road is 20KM/H+. I think this speed, and higher speeds, create some kind of resonance in the forest that bring the deer out from their hiding spots requiring you to slam on the brakes and scare the deer back into hiding when you do see them.

Thirdly, and most importantly, NEVER have a tag for the species of deer you want to see. Deer can sense whether or not you have a tag for their particular species or ###. For example, if you didn't get a Muley doe draw (or buy a doe tag for those lucky enough to be able to do so) you will see scads of does while searching for the buck, that you do have a tag for, and vice-versa.

Hope this can be put to some good use.

Not deer-specific, but I'll add to always bring your rain gear - it will keep it from raining.

You forgot to mention to always scout along roads that divide hunting from no-hunting zones. You will be able to tell which is which by the flocks, hordes, masses of deer on the no-hunting zone size of the road.

I have deer walk right up to me during the turkey season and herds of turkeys go by under my tree stand during deer bow season. In each of their respective seasons I usally get only a single chance to take one. Hope this big game season is different. I laugh at the hunting videos from the USA where the hunters say "I'm passing on this buck, it's only a 8 ot 10 pointer with no mass".

Yeah, same here. I can't stand watching the whitetail hunting shows. Where I'm from, if its got any kind of antlers at all, its a shooter, and anything more than a spikehorn is a trophy.
