hello all.

i have lots of free time and ask too many questions, and have just been re-introduced to the sport and this site by a friend. i have just done the PAL tests with my husband and now we're shopping...

i'm looking for the right fit for the new toys:

a pistol - pistol for my own personal use. used for playing with at the range and for trying out tactical design prototypes without bothering other people to use their toys. hoping to be able to share ammo from the big bag 'o' ammo with my brother (zombie headshot on here) in case of zombie apocolypse, and i think he's a fan of the springfield XD? (bad guy's gun from resident evil, i believe) this one will most likely be duracoated to personalize it (the blasphemy, i know...) and that's just who i am. don't like it, don't borrow my gun.

a shotgun - shotgun to be shared with much taller husband (5'3" vs. 6'2" respectively). shotgun to be used for backwoods protection and/or zombie invasion as first resort weapon. i'm pretty sure that we'll be using buckshot and i want the maximum deterrent possible versus 4 and 2 legged threats. lightweight with a shorter stock would be the best configuration, with a sling even better.

i'm horrible remembering names and numbers, so i can't tell you what i've tried and what i haven't tried without picking more people's brains. all i know is that i liked it; that a shotgun with magnum slugs blew me off my feet and gave me a sore shoulder; and i shoot with a wonky left eye/right arm dominant combo.

want to help a little girl out doing some shopping? can i try your guns? :D
 
I'm old and have gone through a lot of guns in my lifetime. My advice is to find something that fits you well. It means handling as many as you can, but the one that fits the best is the one you can shoot with most accurately. What it turns out to be has to work properly, of course, but somewhere out there in the big world of guns there ought to be a handgun and a shotgun that you can wear well and can do the job. In any case, don't be in too much of a hurry to choose and definitely have fun with it.

Pistol is pretty much personal preference, whatever fits you hands and shoots well for you.

For a S/G is would recommend something in the Remington 870 or a clone (grizzly or norinco) in 12 gauge. Try some 2 3/4" reduced recoil slugs instead of magnums. You could also look at a knoxx's stock or an AR stock adapter from S&J hardware for an adjustable stock that will be a better fit for you and your taller husband.

My wife will not shoot 3" magnum slugs but finds 2 3/4 to be managable.
