Newby hunter question....

Whoa here. The Axis, and it's predecessor the Edge, are NOT good rifles. Yes I owned one, and yes they shoot well, but they are the most cheaply manufactured poorest centre fire rifle out there. Unless you are really on a very limited budget, go for at least the Marlin XS7/XL7 series entry level rifle (yes, owned one of these too and should have kept it). Marlins are twice the rifle IMO for a few dollars more. Fireproof suit is on now, so I repeat, the Savage Axis/Edge rifles are very poor value for the money. The end.

Never handled a Remington 770 have you?

If you buy an Axis and you really get into hunting odds are you'll be buying another gun within 2 years.

I doubt that. I'm "really" into hunting and own everything from a Bubba-Lee to a Merkel Double. My Stevens 200 fills a niche - inexpensive rifle that you don't mind taking out in foul weather or tough conditions. Doesn't hurt that the stupid thing shoots 1/2 MOA most days. Might not be the prettiest, but it works better than some more expensive rifles.

Renting a Savage Axis. LOL. Great idea. That would put you off the notion of buying one in a hurry. Especially if you disassembled the thing to look at the internals.

Never handled/owned a 770 so no comment. If the reviews are to be believed, however, it is possible, Virginia, there is a companion rifle for the Savage Axis/Edge. ;)
