Newer rimfire cartridges - why not the other way?

I paraphrase a reference I read some years ago:

The need to keep the rim crushably soft comes into conflict both with the need to seal the bolt/breech gap against pressure during receiver flex, and with being able to support the necessary extraction force, both of which become more important as the pressure and size of the cartridge increase. These problems can be solved if you work at them, but they can be solved cheaper and more reliably in a centerfire cartridge, so development went that route instead.

I don't remember it mentioning reload-ability either way.
 
Wow, that reloader kit is so ghetto... scraping match heads for primer... blackpowder charge ugh. The point of reloading is for precision :rolleyes: and get a more consistent charge than the factories do. It's probably a pipe dream.
 
I suspect the "recent" arrivals of .17 cal was made economically viable as .17hm2, and .17hmr wre necked down from cartridges that have held marketability for almost 100 years. .22 rimfire won out over all the other rimfire gems for reason, not some corporate big-wig planning on making my .32 rimfire obsolete. The rifles that were in production didn't require any re-tooling other than different barrels. That ease into the market paved moderate success for the .17 from .22.

I'll also point out the best laid plans don't always work. Semi .17's proved to be a little trickier to make. Recall on Remington 597 .17HMR pops to mind.

I love rimfires, but I doubt there will be a re-emergence of beefier cartridges in the future given some of the fine ones were dropped.

Personally I'd like to try one of those "swaging" rimfires that have a taper in the bore. Conventional .22 fed into it, but .17 projectiles come out.
 
I want the opposite. Something like a .01 rimfire. Suitable for ethical kills on spiders and wasps that get in the house, sub moa accurate within 15 feet, slow enough to not make it through a sheet of dry wall. Get a big 25X scope, but with a focal range of 15 feet...

Oh god when will winter be over.
 
I wish the 17 WSM would spawn some better rifles, CZ, Ruger American and a proper Savage like the 93. Then a 6mm version on the WSM case would be the next logical progression, heavier bullets with some hit. Sure, .22 and .204 on the WSM case would round out the line nice too.

The 5mm Rem Mag is a great round, but incredibly obscure. I've got a 591M, and 8 rounds left. I've jumped heavy on the WSM bandwagon, and I love it. My Bmag is a horribly designed POS, but shoots incredible. I've got a Ruger as well, but despite lots of messing around, I can't get performance anywhere close to the Bmag. I've got a Lilja barrel I plan on throwing on it at some point.

Just get a .22 hornet and load it with cast bullets, and light powder loads.

I agree on the .25 Stevens long. Would like to see it again. That's what my profile pic is ;) I doubt that it would ever happen though. Price of ammo would approach centerfire, so what advantage would it offer, and would there be a market other than a few of us looking for something different?
 
The 5mm Remington was around for years before dropping off the market and don't forget about the 17 aguila, that hit the market the same time as the 17 hm2. Rimfires just aren't as popular as the ultra cheap to shoot centre fires. 17 hmr is 50 cents a shot, 22 mag close to that (at least where I live), I couldn't ever seen anything larger then a 5mm in a rimfire.... plus it would have to be so big to be accurate and ammo would be so stupidly expensive..... I own them all, 17hm2, 17 hmr (I guess I sold my
LAst 3 rifles, but had them) 22 wmr and 22 LR. They all have their place, but they hardly come out compared to my centre fires.....
 
Every year-or-so, I write to the Henry Arms folks, trying to convince them to make one of their super handy/fun pump rifles in either .25ACP or .32ACP. I know this is the Rim fire Forum; but those little cartridges would be fun, and the .32 with a 70 grain bullet at about 1000fps hits pretty hard.
