Newish shooter / CZ 457 Lux / Scope Recommendations? / My Experience

Hello folks!

I am quite new to shooting and hunting. I am 28 and started hunting with my future wife and father in law.

I was able to borrow my FiL's 270Win Xpr, with which I got my first deer. Probably within the first 20 rounds I've fired in my life up till then (I took it with 1 shot at 89yards).

So a couple months ago I bought a CZ 457 Lux in 22lr to practice as much as I can for next fall.

I wanted to learn opensights shooting, so that when I got back to a scope it feels a lot easier.

With that being said, I have decided to 'rent' a cvlife scope from amazon for a few weeks. I would like to see what the rifle can do with an optic.

I have been able to shoot a .7" 10 shot group at 25m off a rest. About a 1" group at 25m freehand. But I'm still getting used to how to focus on the post, as I normally shoot with both eyes open.

With all that said:

I am interested in people's thoughts on recommended scopes for a CZ Lux.

I am aware I'll probably have to take the rear leaf off while I have the scope mounted. I will also probably get a lace up riser for the stock.

I had looked at the 1" tube AO scopes, but leupold and vortex both discontinued theirs.

I'll mainly use the rifle to practice for big game season, but I will also use it to hunt rabbit, hare, and grouse.

Looking for recommendations on scopes, opinions on the cz 457, etc...

I'd suggest you look on the EE for Used Scopes. You can get 'more for your money' and there are often 'Name brands' there. For casual targets and small game I'd suggest no more than a 3-9x40 or even a 2-7x40, tho a 4-12 could take advantage of the quality of your rifle. 4x is not too much for short range, like 25-yds.
 
Lux more of an open sight rifle as you know. I have 2 452 Lux but don't use them a ton because of the 24" barrels...if thats the version you have. I scoped one with an older VX-1 2-7×28 because it fits nicely behind the rear mount. The other will be left as it was intended.

That's totally fair. I got it because I wanted something I could use with open sights.

It also got price matched for me so I paid a total of around $820 for it, price jumped to $920 (before tax) after I bought it.

I have just been wanting to see what the rifle can actually do. And practicing for big game shooting across a farm field.


I just put on a cvlife 3-9 ao scope. It's tall, lol. But it's decent for the money so far. And in a couple weeks I'll send it back.

Don't be that guy, just use the scope until you're done with it, then sell it on the EE. I'm not a huge fan of Amazon, but still, taking advantage of a decent customer service policy to get a free "rental" is not cool.

Edit: Besides, you might even make a few bucks selling it on the EE :LOL:

Do what you want to do I guess but I think you'll end up realizing the glass should be close to the rifles cost, which isnt hard these days. You might keep it forever because more rifles will likely come along. No such thing as too many rifles once you scratch the itch.
 
Just make sure your scope isn’t contacting that front sight. I had a Lux model and found the shape of the stock was much better with iron sights. You could get a piece of pipe insulation and a roll of self adhesive bandage wrap and make a high comb yourself. The tape wont stick to the stock so if you decide to back to irons its an easy swap.

Or you could just purchase and mount a scope short enough to not make contact with the rear ramp sight. You may get shadows in the scope from the sights or sight hood at the lowest magnification but not the end of the world and gone by 4x. Lots of guys remove the rear sights on their CZs and lose them. As has been mentioned, hogback stocks are not built to cater to scopes. Buy one in a heavy hitting cartridge and you'll find out why lots won't own one too. They fit me and my shooting setup really well but I'm one of the lucky ones.

So, if you want a scope for plinking out to about 50 yards, ocassionally to 100; this is what i put on a very nice Zastava M22, fixed 4 power, parallax adjustment, zero set for windage and elevation. Cheap, comes on and off easy with the dovetail mounts, and is short so you can mount it low, behind the sight. The rings it came with are too high. It will still sit almost an inch higher line of sight than the iron sights, but that is better than 2". I have also had it on my 452 lux. Good set up.

I have a 452 Lux. It's such a beautiful rifle that I actually went out of my way to find a scope to match it. I bought a Leupold VX-1 Rimfire.

I did not need to remove the rear sight and I did not need a stock riser. I'm a big boy, so perhaps that's why.

I forget what I used for rings. I've not shot the rifle in some years now.
