Newton rifle...

Whats "a 'good deal' for a Newton rifle" ...... lots of depends... depends on how well it was rebarreled (or rebored) what kind of shape the stock is in and the hardware; whether it is safe (headspace/chamber/firing pin/trigger group etc) and how much you want it. I guess if you are buying... 300-400 isn't a bad deal and if you are selling .... 900-1200 isn't a bad deal. "Book values" are a "guide" but ultimately the "cash" value is determined by how much a buyer will actually pay and the intrinsic value is often emotional and established by the owner....AP

According to Otteson, the second Newton action design is not as good as the first. In a way, Newton and Ross had something in common. Both were promoters, had unusual ideas, and understood the advantages of high velocity.

The one that isn't quite as good looks like the springfield. In fact Newton sold kits using the springfield as a base.
After the bankruptcy rifles were put together from parts left over by the creditors these are your Buffalo Newtons and there not as good either.

I had a real close look at this rebarreled 'Newton' rifle yesterday that is the subject of this thread. Looks like someone did a decent job. The barrel is a Remington 700 factory take-off .25-06 barrel. Barrel is around 24", clean with no iron sites. The receiver has been drilled & tapped for Weaver bases. Bases installed looked like they were Weaver #25's. The buttstock has been fitted with a brown recoil pad that's in very good condition. [Something like a Pachmayr 'Whiteline'].
Otherwise this referbished 'Newton' looks pretty much like the one in the picture from page 1...

Stock is slim with the 'schnabel' type forend. Double set triggers. The only little issue I could see is a very small crack starting to appear in the stock where the metal of the receiver tang fits into it. [Kinda like you see on some of the older Husqvarna's]. Probably could be salvaged with some 'relief' in that area for someone who is 'handy'.

I have 20-30 original 256 Newton cartridges I'd let go if I had any idea of the value?? & any-one was interested. They're pretty neat looking with the wire core bullet center

ask Dusty61 about the newtons Kristian, he owns a few of them factory original

Thanks Rob, I would like to buy it because it is cheap, but I hardly need it. I'll pm him, maybe he could use the parts.
