Don't mind him, BUM, he's still carrying a 375 Chatfield-Taylor. :D

Ted

The cartridge Ruger should have adopted as their offering to the medium bore market!!!

OP, I have both the Whelen and the 9.3X62 as well as the 350 RM, I have no use for the 338-06 as I have the 340 Wby. The Whelen and the 350 RM for all intents and purposes are identical, the 9.3 gives up a couple hundred fps and some range to the 35s but allows much heavier bullets and more bone crushing close in stuff. I've killed game with both and really I don't have a bad word for any of your choices except I do not like the 338-06 as the Whelen is a much superior cartridge as is the 9.3. Both the Whelen and 9.3 work flawlessly with cup + core bullets and neither needs premium high dollar bullets to perform their task admirably. I've used Speer hot cores with perfect performance in both. It really comes down to bone crushing closer in stuff or a little better velocity and trajectory with the 35s. I love them both but neither does what the 340 Wby does, better than either. I know it's not on your list but many people overlook it when choosing a small mid bore rifle. The 340 Wby gives the trajectory of a 300 WM with the energy of the 375 H&H and more. It is capable of bone shattering close in shots and I have literally taken game beyond 500 mtrs with mine and it still hits like "Thor's Hammer" way out there. Just a thought, for you!!

I am surprised that Ruger, or someone else, didn't do that long ago when everyone was lamenting the dearth of 375 rifles, and them only being available in long actions. As you know, Bevan King built one for me many, many, years ago, and it was everything it was supposed to be: H&H performance out of a 22" barrel in a standard action.

Put quite a few pounds of meat in the freezer with 270 Power Points and a stomach full of 4320 using that rifle. You got the last of those bullets from me. :)

Did you end up selling it to Paul? That would explain a lot.

Hi Tikkam65,
I am a relatively new devotee of the 6.5s but have not hunted anything but whitetail with a Swede Mauser so far. Have you used your 6.5 on any heavier/larger game? How was the performance, and what ranges/bullet weight/type?......thanks......karl

You guys sound like you are trying to reinvent the wheel.
One or two of your choices have been around for 75 years. Why would they suddenly become the next hunting calibre?

Of your choices, 35 Whelen would be my pick. Brass a'plenty with a simple neck up if required and more plentiful bullet choices compared to the 9.3
I run the 225 Partitions out of my 19 inch barrel 350RM chronoed ~2700+ fps. Good BC, good trajectory, works very well ;) I've only taken a 10 point white tail with it since I've had it but was very impressed with the performance at 120 yards :) The Whelen is pretty much identical, but then so is the 9.3

You know, Guys, it is obvious that all three will kill stuff, however this idea about huge bullet selection in a particular caliber has always kind of amused me.

There are over forty different bullets available for the 270, but what more does one really need than a 100, 130, and 150 gr to hunt anything in NA? I have a gooid friend who has killed more grizzlies with his old 270 Winchester than most of you will ever see. Most of them were one shot kills.

Likewise the 30 cals, we would get along just fine with 150, 180, and 220s if someone wanted a real buster load. Myself and a buddy have hunted and killed a lot of big game with the 358 Win, 35 Whelen, 358 Norma. I even played with a 358 Ackley Mag on the full length H&H case for a while. The 250 gr Speer works in all of them, and the partition is just death on wheels. Any of us could testify the same about any and every caliber.

As for the 9.3X62, I have never loaded anything lighter than 250 gr, and have never killed anything with that weight, but I know that a 250 gr Accubond started out at 2700 fps will work just fine, and will do it way past 300 yd. I have killed bears and moose with the 270 gr Speer and Matrix bullets, and put literally tons of moose and caribou in the freezer with the 286 gr bullet, and done so at distances ranging from 25 feet to over 300 yd.

Take your pick, load a good bullet, learn to shoot the rifle, and any of them will work. :)

Best,
Ted

Well stated Ted and it sort of echos some of the same basic philosophy and sentiments my Dad would've expressed. His chioces, and he shot them well, an old Cooey Senior single shot and Husqvarna 30-60. As such he often questioned why I 'needed' the assortment I have. I guess part of the equation is in his day and time, funds were somewhat 'tighter' and more time was spent making ends meet, generally compared to what I've experienced. For him, the rifle was a tool. Appreciate a nice one when you got it, take care of it but a tool nonetheless. The few extra bucks have allowed me to gradually enhance the numbers in the safe and the greater spare time I've had has given me the opportunity to shoot and hunt with them plus take up the reloading hobby. When visiting, he admired the quality of decent rifles in my assortment but still couldn't understand why I had the numbers I had that were all basically capable of doing the same job in NA.

Well in this country we are only allowed one wifey and play time is always scheduled and timed.
Where else might a rednick have superior pleasure other than an alotment of powder burners?
And pretty easy to hide from snooping eyes.
I had four out and exposed one day out in the geerage and who pops in unexpectantly?
Why the missus.
"How many of those do you own"? she asks....................Laugh2
"Well dear, just these four".
"Yah, right".
Mums the werd.

I'm a 35 fan, so the 35 Whelen would be my choice............But I also pack a 375 Ruger and its a handy rifle as well. Both my 35 Whelen and 375 are Rugers.

During the first years we were married and when the numbers of firearms were very low, my wife took notice of and commented on virtually every 'new arrival'. As years passed and with the slow steady increase in numbers, the keeping track of what was available gradually decreased. The last comment I can recall was a while back when I brought home another safe. I explained;) it was just to handle the over flow and the rolling of her eyes was the only reaction.

Back to Dear old Dad and his take on my 'acquisitions', he had difficulty understanding why I have the numbers I have. I can only imagine what his reaction would be now to some of the caliber duplications I have. Just in rifles, I'm sure he would more than question why in hell I'd 'need' a pair of 270's

Or a pair of 358 Norma Magnums

Some of the caliber duplications in my handguns would really blow him away.

On of the best posts I've seen in awhile, just cleaned up a bit of coffee spray off the screen.I was had like this just a short time ago in the same way, after stuttering around a bit I said they belonged to my son, don't think it really worked but my wife is not too hard to get along with as she does a bit of shooting herself on occasion, just not as occasionally as myself.

375 H&H as well: Then the Whelen, followed by the 338-06; then I guess that 9.3x ? thingy that has probably killed a lot of moose in Europe!!!
