So, I can see myself owning another pistol in 3-6 months (I'm exaggerating a little, it will probably be much sooner than that).

Anyways, this gun will be a 9mm, semi auto of some sort. I would like to be able to do IPSC matches, action shooting and some informal competitions, nothing to serious, but I would definitely like the gun to be able to shoot better than me for at least a few years. I should add that I will be reloading and plan to shoot the sh*t out of it

I am partial to the Glock 17s, I have held them and researched them a lot, really like the reliability factor and design. This gun is in and around my budget of $600-800

I have also been looking at a Beretta 92FS, and possibly a used Sig 226. I have read the thread glock vs sig, gotta a lot of good information out of there.

What's your recommendation??

P.S. Are the 1911s any good at this kinda thing, I didn't really consider them although I will definitely own one down the road regardless
 
It seems you 've already lean toward a Glock and I can tell you that you'll never disappointed. Not a beautiful gun and far from perfection but it glow on you. It is a ugly black workhorse and almost trouble free unlike some other plastic gun. The best bang of buck. I have a G17 and like it a lot. Beretta 92FS is a beautiful piece of art and very reliable, both Glock and Beretta are good pick.

Consider the G17, the CZ-75 Shadow, the IWI Baby Eagle, and the STI GP6.

Consider the availability of .22LR conversions.

And then buy what you want.
 
If you want to shoot IPSC, I'd go with .40 or .45, otherwise your 9mm will be penalized, from my understanding.
 
Try out the Glock if you can. The finger grooves don't bother me on my 19 but for some reason I can't shoot a 17 without them being uncomfortable.

Go for the Sig 226.

That's what I got for my first gun, so I have a bit of a bias. It's an excellent pistol and, in my opinion, superior to the Glock...

If you get it in .40 S&W you have a marginal increase over 9mm for cost, but you are in the "major caliber" league for IDPA/IPSC shooting.
 
If at all possible, you should try and handle all of your options. That will tell you everything you need to know. The Glock feels like it was made for me, two of my friends like it and one hates it.
 
Glock G17, S&W MP9, or CZ SP-01. I have all three (two in duplicates), for a first gun I would go Glock G17 followed by the SP-01. Two very different 9mms, both with pros and cons. I say G17 first based partially on your post (you seem to be leaning that way already based on your history and experience) and partially on my history with them. They are easy to use (safeties are automatic, one type of trigger pull, etc), they are easy to take apart to clean (and I don't mean field strip, I mean take down to their constituent pieces), they are quite cheap right now (compared to the $1k you had to spend a few years back), and the reliability is second to none.

Regarding the Sig, I have two right now. They are reliable as all hell. They are well made. They are accurate. My biggest grip with them is their high bore axis. I find Sigs not quite as easy to shoot (especially shoot quickly) as some of my other pistols. The trigger reset on older Sigs plain sucks as well so if you do go Sig, I would suggest getting one with the Short Reset Trigger (SRT).

I second Wendell, especially the .22LR conversions. At first I didn't see the light as far as conversions. So i purchased a 22LR pistol, I wanted a higher 'gun' count.

Then i went shooting with someone who had a 1911 with a 22LR conversion. it was nice to use the cheaper ammo and still have the same feel (less the bang). Then converted back, and was surprised how the .22 helped in handling larger round. After that day I was converted!!!

One of my next purchases is a conversion for my CZ75 and 1911.

When shooting in Production division everyone is scored the same way whether your shooting 9mm, .40, .38Super, .45, etc. If you're shooting a gun that isn't on the Production list you would be bumped up to Standard division with the mostly stock 1911's. Shooting 9mm in standard division you would be scored as minor. That's why most of the guns being used in Standard are .40.
