So I'm looking into my next purchase and I'm thinking revolver. Was looking at the Ruger Blackhawk in 45 Colt but the single action makes me leery. My budget is $1000 and preferably I'd like something double action in 45 Colt that can handle the high pressure loads. Haven't been able to find such a beast and wondering does this exist?

I have a Rossi Ranch Hand in .45 Colt and a Ruger Lipsey convertible in .45 Colt/.45ACP. The Ruger is a New Model Blackhawk so it should be able to handle heavy loads. I like the .45Colt round a lot.

A revolver would be a great choice! But why would a SA make you leary? I luv my SA actions. If you order the Ruger Blackhawk in 45LC get the extra 45ACP cylinder for more variety.
Blued one is a SA black powder and the second from the bottom is a Ruger Bisley Hunter .44mag.

the Redhawk in 45 is what you are looking for. i've seen 2 for sale at epps over the past year. looks like they are still making them in the 4.2" length.

curious, if double action is important, why not a 44?

Should have mentioned the revolver will be used as a black bear defense gun and figured for follow up shots it would be nice to not have to worry about cocking the hammer before each shot. The 45Colt round is full of history and that's something I appreciate. While the original guns and ammunition of the wild west days would make for a poor choice to defend against black bear, modern more solidly built guns using higher pressure rounds would make for good bear medicine. There's also the fact I already load the cartridge for my H&R Survivor and have been very happy with it's accuracy out to 25M. I've been looking into the ranch hand but in reality there's no comparison for practicality between the ranch hand and a revolver at least for my uses.

The 4.2 Redhawk Would be perfect for your needs. However you might need to be patient as it will be hard to find. If you wanted something asap, i would think a 4.2 629 in 44 would be a reasonable compromise. You can find a lightly used one for 800 or so. you are already reloading and dies aren't that expensive.

Well you can certainly feed the Redhawk heavy loads. Buffalobore makes 325gr load at 1325 ft/sec for the Redhawk!

That's great. I'm already reloading and casting for the cartridge but I'll probably end up buying a mold to cast heavier bullets as I'm currently only casting 230gn.

Haven't been able to find a Redhawk in 45 anywhere so thinking of this purchase as a Christmas present to myself if I can't find it by December I figure I'll get a Blackhawks in 45. With practice I should be able to make cocking the hammer second nature and be able to do so with an exceptable amount of speed in the event I have to defend myself against a bear.
