Next spring Turkey hunt news

well its good to hear they easing up a bit.....i quess with the abundance of the birds..they easing up on the rules..i guess once they say all birds are game:cool: ..they will be plentyful..
BTW.......you coming up for another round at TRYING to get one in the spring?the guy down the road from us had 23 in a field he came upon;)

Lots of Birds getting shot now... not like the early years and the reporting should be better with a phone in system.
You will still have to weigh and verify your bird if you want the scores entered in the record book.
 
But what was the info used for, extending seasons or hunt areas? Or was it another excuse to employ people?
 
I imagine they used the info to get an idea of how well the birds were faring etc. a lot of the weigh stations IIRC were hunting supply outfits so there may have been some "payback: to tory supporters but I doubt it was a lot. the lieberals probably realized most people involved with hunting are not their supporters so deciced to kill the porgram for that reason alone

yep they say there about 90,000 to 100,000 birds:eek:
 
The weight data give the biologists a profile on how well the population is maturing, how many are young, are the mature birds getting good forage, etc. Turkeys have been re-introduced in Ontario from being extinct in this range. The downside is there is every indication they will become a nuisance species, perhaps even worse than deer.
A bigger question for Ontario is whether the elk that were introduced should be completely culled. There is some reason to believe the presence of the elk may become a risk to the spread of CWD in deer in Ontario.
 
That work here is funded by shooting orgs acting as charities, by the time the govt extract the digit the problem populations are eating theyre way to an explosion. Its what we are going through at the moment with wild boar and dont even ask about tb in cattle from badgers. By the time the govt wakes up its single cell brain to order a cull it gets in a focus group who demand that alternatives are tried. See earlier and putdowns for CAVE. These people would rather the animals starved or were given contraception and education. It doesnt work in the city how on earth will it work in the wood? Hello Mrs Sow I'm your health visitor!
 
The data was used for understanding how the population would compare in anyone area. What the winter effects had on the birds in anyone area, To keep track of each different strain and how they compared to the other's in Ontario. The track of jakes in one season would imply how spring hatches would go and how fast the population increased. It gave the MNR a reading on How many birds were in Ontario in a season.

Why they canned the operation, Well the funding is gone, and this was one cut back also...
 
Seems a pity that we here do that sort of reporting voluntarily and the info is collated by a charity to use in study of English Partridges, woodcock, snipe etc. Not funded through any game license which is about to be scrapped along with the Sunday restriction on shooting. Again we have no financial support for this work from the Govt yet they rely on it when reviewing our submissions for season changes.

i have a turkey question...i should know te answer to this but i dont:redface: ..
what is the kind of range would a turkey cover say in a year?i know they move on for new food supplies
