next up.. hand cannon

I remember the first time I shot a SBH, it was a blued 7 1/2" dragoon style trigger guard. My buddy who's pistol it was was telling me how hard it kicked so I was braced as much as a rookie can be and holding on tight with both hands...... Boom! I looked over at him...... turned sideways to the target and proceeded to empty the cylinder shooting and cocking with my right hand only..... huge smile!

The Hunter's are nice because the rib gives them even a bit more heft and they also come with a larger Dragoon sized grip but with the round trigger guard.

.357 Rem mag N frames right? I have a GP100 4.2 (also wears Hogue hardwoods) and I really like it, I've never even thought of shooting .357 out of an N frame Smith...hmmm...off to google. (I have a feeling this isn't going to end well {for the bank account;)})

There's also a model 627 n-frame .357 on the EE if you don't mind not using your hogue ;)

I like the Gp100. It seems to be in between a k frame and an L frame. The 27 is nice, though.

The biggest "Hand-cannon" I owned was the 5" 460V. Shooting anything less than 460magnum out of it was disappointing. The novelty wore off after a few boxes of magnums.

i just plunked down $630 for a spankin new girsan stainless 9 mm,now i'm on the hunt for a .44 sa/da revolver.not a lot of choices that i've noticed so far, super redhawk,s/w 629,raging bull that i'm not too keen on and the model 29 (dirty harry was my childhood hero) which may be out of my price range.i'd like to hear your completely biased opinions.truth be told i'm just buying one for the cool factor but a decent shooter as well,so go ahead, talk me into the only choice :d

Can't talk about the Redhawk, but it has a very good reputation. I've shot the Taurus in .44 and it was very accurate, but the ports on the barrel make it seem like you're shooting a .38 Special. I've got a 686 .357 S&W and it's awesome, so I'd say save the cash a bit longer and go for the Model 29. Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum - it's an iconic gun that you'll be happy you saved longer for.

Have you tried......................................................................................................................................................cleaning it? f:P:2:

Yah it sounds like he got a lemon. 29/629's dont' have a great reputation by fluke.

I would love a 44 mag but I'm not set up for reloading yet. If I were in the market for one though I'd be very tempted to get a smith and Wesson 629. I love my smiths but I really drool over the ruger Bisley Hunter also. Such a gorgeous piece of gear.

I had the same experience with my 460. My handloads were pretty spicy, it was fun for a while but the headaches from the concussion blast helped me with the decision to sell it. I much prefer the 44mag I have now. Still get plenty of fireball and boom that everyone likes but without the nasal cavity rattle the 460 gave. It was like shooting a short barrel AR with a brake, cool but not comfortable for more than a few rounds.

44 Mags are great guns. Ammo is somewhat plentiful (reloading still rules), it's got a big bang and turns heads. But...

...I'm the opposite. I LOVE the concussion. The super-nova flame belching dimension splitting concussion that grabs the the whole range and shakes it like a dog......yeah, that's me over at bay 4.

I laugh when I'm at the range and I warm up with the 44 Mag. I've had people say "Don't you normally end the session with the big guns?" Yup. "But that's a 44 Mag!" Yup. ""
Their eyes get really big when I start loading the torpedoes into the 460 and I tell them "This ain't the big gun." :sok2

Buy the 44 Mag for the "simply because" factor. Whichever one you get, it'll be a blast.

(E)

If you want concussion without a pile of recoil - Ruger Blackhawk in 30M1

Reload it with H110 - factory stuff is less impressive

People think I'm shooting a 44 mag, from the fireball and blast

I found that the hope of follow up shots with the S&W 500 or 460 are out the window. With the .44 it is possible with factory loads. Not that it would ever really matter for me, but if I were in bear country and could carry, it would be the .44. I want more than one opportunity if charged. :)

Yup, there is a reason why the true hand cannons are normally single shots, aside from gun strength issues, fast follow up shots are not part of the program.
And good porting gets to be more of a necessity versus a nice to have. I own a 338jdj, and had a 375jdj. The 338 unported, and the 375 ported. I couldn't tell the difference between them recoil wise, even though the 338 generates quite a bit less horsepower.
Also had two pistols in 444marlin, one ported, one not. The ported one fealt not much hotter than a 500. While the unported one was truly uncomfortable. I'm fairly tolerant of pistol recoil, but 5 or so rounds out of the unported is all I could do at a sitting.

I have a Ruger Super Redhawk in 44 with the 9.5" barrel and it is a hoot! It loves a nice medium hand load and always gets people's attention.

I just picked up a couple weeks ago a ruger redhawk but this one is magna ported and i'm gonna have to try the buffalo bore in it if i can find it
