John Farnam's Quips - 12Jan11.html - Training Aid

Training Aid

12 Jan 11 Today, during a Training Course at a local Pistol Range in FL, I had the opportunity to use a SIRT, laser-training pistol. It is an inert pistol-prop, modeled after a G17, with two, visible lasers. One (red) turns on when you touch the trigger. The second (green) turns on when the trigger breaks. Both follow the same path and are visible downrange. I found it useful in helping students to fully understand the way the motion of the trigger affects the path, and impact point, of the bullet. I may find more uses as I continue to use it, but first impressions were positive.

One can get a 9mm or bigger caliber bore sighting bullet laser insert and use it as a point of reference.

Potentially big problem is that it will teach you to look at the target where laser is pointing to and not at the sights where you should be focused. Never focus at the target, unless you are running an open gun, but there you already have a red dot.

I had a chance to try it a week ago at the club, one of the staff was getting ready for a match. This is NOT about a laser sight, but rather a comparison of RED dot that comes up when you prep the trigger with GREEN dot when you break the shot. The difference shows flinching, lack of follow-through, grip issues etc. The initial focus on target and laser dots can be quickly unlearned, and a proper sight picture gets superimposed with the laser dots because of visual memory.

Extremely useful tool, IMO, even though using it requires training. Have a look at h ttp://nextleveltraining.com/video_gallery to see for yourself.

Train Safe® firearm block

<http://www.trainsafe.us/products.php>

Train Safe® is a firearm block to make an officer's duty weapon safe to use during firearms training and to render a firearm unusable when stored or on display. Invented by firearms instructor, John Carlin, of Lanesboro, Minn., Train Safe® is a must for all firearms education programs.

Train Safe® firearm block makes it impossible to fire a live round without stripping the weapon and removing the block.

Train Safe® signals visually that the firearm is disabled, giving confidence to instructors and trainees.
