I've decided after a few year of messing around with no land and coming up empty handed during moose hunting, that I want to start goose hunting. What kind of gear am I likely going to need and how can one tell if a particular area is going to be "goosey" when the season rolls in?

You need lits of decoys a call and a shotgun. A layout blind is nice to have but if there is snow on the griund we usually just wear white camo or coveralls and lay flat and still. A flag is good to have to get the birds attention as well.
As far as where you just need to find a field where there are lots of geese. Usually there is lots but with the weather as cold as it has been and the water freezing it has presented some issues for me and my group. But if you find a field where the geese and ducks are feeding you just gotta get permission.

Scouting is the key, you find fields with birds in them for a day or two then you ask the landowner for permission.
