Cool article. This was especially interesting:

My Uncle was one of them.... joined the US Navy and served on a destroyer of the coast of vietnam protecting the carrier groups and doing onshore bombardment.
 
if you check canada had troops in vietnam around or just after the end of the korean war. we also left vietnam after the americans as we had peacekeepers there i believe.
canada had a military presence there throughout the war mostly as exchange military.
when i was 17 i went to recruiting and asked about becoming a helicopter pilot. the only way was to signup and then go on exchange with the americans. i would never have got in as a pilot because i wore glasses and have a medical problem.
i know of only one canadian soldier who was in vietnam in the 50's and none after that.
many claimed they went but were full of bs.
 
morpheus32- i don't know where you got you information but the fellow i knew that went to vietnam was an LT.
we have always had exchange officers with the americans even serving in war. in IRAQ the americans had 3 army divisions and the 2nd division was commanded by a canadian general. if iam not mistaken he is now the head of canadian armed forces.
rumor has it that JTF2 worked in IRAQ and if that is true then there was definitely officers there.
as a matter of fact there is always an american officer or more permanently assigned to air force command here in winnipeg. the reason i know this is when i was still driving taxi i used to take him home as a fare. they are always colonels.
 
International Commission for Supervision and Control (ICSC) was the organization that Canadian soldiers served under during the Vietnam War. To monitor ceasefire agreements under the Geneva Accords and we acted as a go between. (Yeah, laughable indeed) IIRC Polish & Indian troops were also present in the same mission, mostly seen on the "other side" of the DMZ. A few of them flew by Hercules transport to Hanoi to deliver whatever documents and other official communications to the North. Apparently on return to the South, there we many questions directed at them, specifically about the condition of this city after much aerial bombing.
There was another similar mission also under a slightly differing title somewhere in SE Asia. But it's acronym is unknown to me. In Laos maybe??

Edit: Canadian troops in combat, in Vietnam, under the US flag while serving Canada? Hello, no medal or decoration for this type of service.
I don't believe this to be true myself. Bar room talk.
Lots of volunteers under the foreign service program and that's it.
