I got one yesterday I jumped out of a ditch at a potato field and when she plucked it my wife was convinced I shot it twice it was so full of holes.
"What did you shoot this with?" she asked.
"12 gauge, 2 3/4-inch #3 shot, the same as usual," I replied.
She packaged it and froze it labelled "Mallard collander."
What really choked me up was that I had actually shot two mallards and they fell on the other side of the deep ditch so that I had to walk 100 yards to the other end to cross it to the other field and walk back and while I was at the other end an eagle picked one up.
Been there....heheheh I have a small grappling hook on 80# dacron line that I carry to 'hook em' and I carry a telescoping decoy retriever (40" ish compact, opens to 18'+) on my vest. Since I don't hunt with a dog, the only ones I seem to lose are the ones that I hit and they fly off in the twigh light, I can hear the thump, but sometimes cannot find them or they don't land in the water. Some of the sloughs here are 20+' across. I am just pickier about which ones I shoot.
