nice Norincrap eh.....

PRE-POST: I am not dumping on Norcs here...I'm just talking about pouring serious dough into customizing 1911s.

The real question is - how much money is that gun worth? There's about $1000 in gunsmith work there between the prep, HC, Slide lightning, bomar cut, front dovetail, front strap checkering, beavertail cut and installation of the new parts and proper blending. Then there's probably an additional $600+ in SA magwell, trigger, grip and thumb, safeties, sights, hammers, beavertails, and I'm sure some nice innards.

All that gunsmithing takes it out of Norinco's special place, the low budget - easy accessible market and tosses it into the custom market.

It was done on a $300 gun. So $1600+$300 = $1900 Norinco. If it was done on a SA, or a Colt or caspian frame and slide, it would increase the cost by about $400. You'd then have a $2300 Springfield Armory, Colt or Caspian.

Which do you think you'd get your money out of later, if you needed to?

If you find someone else as clear headed as some of you, you'd get the extra coin for the loaded Norc, but you'd have a much bigger market if you built the SA.

IMHO, none of the above. Just like my custom .35 Whelen Mauser 98 that cost 3K or my .300 H&H Remmy 700 that cost 5K. If I put them at the local shop the shopkeep would likely advise to list them at 1K or less.

Frankly, people who pay for a custom gun don't care about resale. They want the gun made to their specs at any cost - I know I do.

If you think for 10 seconds a $2300 SA or Colt with the same mods as that $1900 Nork would fetch what it cost to build them on the open market then Freedom Ventures must have it's racks filled with overpriced guns - just one man's opinion.

Actually, probably neither. You'd get some of your money out of both but you'd virtually never get all of your money out of either.

But, despite being a Norc 1911 fan as an econo 1911, it wouldn't be my first choice for a 'custom job' either.

As I mentioned Iam not flaming. I have seen Rolex 'copies' that are every bit as good as the real thing....18k 2 tone gold and all(Rolex Movement is not that great anyway) Sitting beside my Submariner one would never know. Everyone is has an opinion on this subject so whatevs.

Funny thing about watches....is that they don't have to all be Rolexes in order to tell time properly. Is time somehow "more" 3:00 on your Rolex than it is on my Timex Indiglo?

On the subject of custom guns I guess it depends on what you are building and why. Would I buy a fully customized Nork or Colt from Claven2 because he put $5k into it for the things he likes - nope! Would I put $5K into a Nork to have the things I like for the uses I have - you bet. The only downside to the Nork that I do own and why I also have a Para SSP that has virtually the same factory items as I put on the Nork is that I will want to travel to the US to attend some local shoots in Washington and I can't take my Nork across the border. Both are shooters with the edge going to the Norinco.

If there is a better bae gun to do a quality build on and spend your brains out doing a full custom job on I have yet to see any better than the NOrinco.

Now if Claven2 woould sell me his Norinco A1 that he did a little work on I might part with, oh I don't know, say $600. :D

Take Care

Don't have the Rolex/s anymore. I started shooting again and had to sell them off to suppport the habit:redface: And if you took time to read anything past ROLEX then you would see that is exactly what I said. I use the clock on my cell phone these days.

rolex is for pretentious pricks, but My Omegas will never be replaced by something as crude as a cell phone - lol.

While we're talking custom Norks, here's some pics of mine. I doubt it would have turned out any better if a Colt or Springfield had been used as the starter point. Frankly any single-stack 1911 with decent metallurgy and proper geometry can be made into a nice gun by a talented pistolsmith.

Resale shouldn't matter b/c if you ever plan to sell, I would counsel against ANY custom build - they are NOT cost effective. Don't believe me? Build a top IPSC gun and then try to get your money out of it - then we'll talk ;)

harsh talk there...The phone works great. Prolly made by the commies too. I agree that Omega makes a decent watch. The best part is you can buy one at COSTCO along with the other mass produced house hold stuff.

Enough hyjacking...

Got a Timex Indiglo that I bought in Maui in 1994 for $20. Other than 2 batteries & a couple sets of straps it's still goin' strong after all these years as an almost daily wearer...
