Came across this old case recently. Wish I had the gun it was made for. Not much info out there on Pape guns. Anyone recommend correct leather care product I should use on it?
Cheers

Nice case. Was the owner's name changed and the Brass plaque added later?

Pecard's Leather Dressing would help the leather out.

Found this on a website:

"W.R.PAPE
William Rochester PAPE of Newcastle upon Tyne started his business in 1857 & in the following years wins The Field Trials 1858, 1859, & 1866. In 1859 PAPE organises the first dog show in Great Britain & the prizes are PAPE shotguns.

IN 1866 PAPE patents a single bite snap action which contains the earliest known description of choke borings & is widely recognised as the inventor of choke boring shotguns, winning a prize of ten guineas in 1875 in a competition organised by the Field newspaper.

PAPE died in 1923 following a road accident & the business ceased in 1940."

What a great find. Love the coat of arms. Now you will have to go out and buy something to put in it. :)

Pape

Met a local fellow here on the island that has a Pape shotgun made late 1800's which fit perfectly in this case. Said he' go maaaaybe $150 for the case. So I said well maaaaybe I'd go $150 for his gun as the two belonged together. People are funny!

Check out the new issue (May/June) of Shooting Sportsman. There just happens to be a nice write up about W.R. Pape and his guns. Very informative, and some nice pics of Pape guns. The gun that goes with that case would likely be worth a few $$!

For a while I was looking for a case of this type, and followed the bidding on ebay pretty closely, as well as checking the British gun auctions, where they often come up for sale. I got a pretty good idea of the market after looking for a while. In the condition it's in, I don't think $150 for a local cash sale is too far off the mark. If you want to get top dollar, I would think you might get somewhere into the $200's on ebay. The cases that really bring big money are of oak and leather construction in high condition, whereas this one looks to be of the lighter weight style.

150$ to 200$ is about right for such a fine case .if the gun was in the case .then the case would add about 500$ to the total price of the gun in the case DUTCH

Case

My point was that if I had a scarce gun like a Pape and had a chance to mate it with a correct case I'd jump at it. What I didn't mention is that he has about 15 shotgun cases in various stages of deterioration that he wants $200+ for at shows.

:pThat is the way it always works.
Mind you , If I had his shot gun , and needed a case, I would not
be such a C SOB

I agree that if I had a Pape gun that fit the case I'd quickly shell out a reasonable premium to get one with an original maker's label.
