Nice Portugese K98K SOLD FOR 499$??

It IS a very good deal.

But what did he mean by "not for military collectors"?

A lot of snobbery out there.
Portuguese M41 K98k that were used by Germany mostly look rather decrepit and many ended up as mismatched RC. Some were kept by Germany for the war effort and some did end going to Portugal. My dad used one for his Military service in Angola and Mozambique.

Any of his Compadres happen to be issued "Vergueiros"? :)

Too long dead to ask.
He did train local troops and they were more likely to have the Vergueiros, but as long as they shoot they most likely did not care which they were using.

Neither rifle is a slouch. Portuguese did take their weapons seriously.

I just talked to him. He said it was refinished.

Still, I'd love to find one of those babies at that price.

He said the bore was mint.

It would be nice to see some more detailed photographs or to know on what basis Gunnar believes the rifle to be refinished. I know that it wasn't his shop that did the refinishing, but maybe he sees something that we can't in the pictures.

If one didn't know this was a Portuguese contract mauser, then I can understand assuming it was refinished based on condition alone. To my amateur eye, the stampings still appear to be crisp and showing the bulge of displaced metal, so if it was refinished, it was not heavily buffed:

There is one picture on his website where it looks like someone electropenciled their PAL or drivers licence number on the butt plate. Other than that, hard to say without more detailed pics of the metal and wood. Still looks pretty sweet.

By 'refinished' does he mean the stock or was the metal redone? (doesn't appear to be but hard to be absolutely sure from pics) I wouldn't mind at all if the stock was refinished for that price. If reblued in any way then I can understand the 'not for collectors' remark.

If anyone wants a "refinished K98" rifle, and is really into the refinished look and scene, there's a $2500.00 RC out there that was refinished by Ivan.
Dig deep into those pockets! :D

Blue looks original.
Stock dent under Oberndorf leads me to believe that ok.
The electro-penciling is Bubba's "bec de morte", but still not all that bad.

Definitely looks like the beautiful bluing on a port mauser.
The wood still looks good, look how proud of the buttplate the wood is in that last pic.

I was 5 $#@&ing minutes behind you on that rifle. Had to check the funds weren't tied up in something else and when I called back it was gone.

I kicked a lot of rocks around the drive that night.

Keep looking, eventually you'll find one. :)

I had an all matching 100% 1941 Port with sling and matching bayonet and scabbard to the rifle! Sold it to fund my G43.

Was a nice rifle, but on my budget, I tell myself that I prefer Shooter K98's anyway!:p

I wouldn't know what he based his observations on. You'd have to ask him.

I have respect for him though, at least he isn't trying to flog it as all original for $1800.

I'd like to find one in that condition for that price.

Once again, I'm a day late and a dollar short.:(

I picked up the Portuguese Mauser from the Wolverine sale and have high hopes based on the description. I'll post photos at a later date when I have the rifle in hand.
