Hey guys, I've got a nice big black bear coming to my bait site regularly, but I can't get him to come in during hunting hours only late at night, any ideas?

Here's what I tried last year, when I had the same problem. Night after night they would show up 10-15mins after legal light. (trail camera proved it)
I read about being about to "rattle the can" so I took a 100' piece of cheap rope, tied it to the barrel, ran it to my tree, through an eyelet that I screwed into the bottom of the tree and up to my stand. About an hour before dark I gave it a few good pulls and rattled the can around. 10 minutes before light was over in walked 2 bears. They apparently think another bear is robbing the site early, so they come earlier. Worth a shot.

We had the same problem a couple years ago while bear hunting. I like your idea. I will try that next time.

This is a great idea. I have been told some guys also will take a sack in with them of bait soaked with old maple bacon grease, then take it out with them when they are going. The maple bacon scent is only there when they are in the stand. That has worked for a couple of guys. I know when you fry that maple bacon in the house the smell is there for the entire day it seems.

Thanks for the tips, I'll definitely try the can. I think I'll try the sack with maple bacon grease too. Couldn't hurt, though its getting a little late in the season to get them used to the idea that the bacon leaves when I do.

Limit the amount of bait in the barrel. The bears will figure out they need to be early if they want to get any food. Also try going with a friend, have them walk in with you. Once you set up have them walk out and drive away, the bears will hear someone leave and assume you just rebaited and left.

Honey burn, walk into stand with a buddy talking, do the burn and have your buddy walk out talking to himself aloud and you stay at the stand. This has workded for us.

Dump lots of old fryer grease around the bait site, hopefully it will attract other bears then there's competition and perhaps one of the other bears will be a sow coming into heat. Don't put him on a "diet", big bears lose interest fast and he won't return. Put your tree stand the highest you feel comfortable and as far away from the bait as possible. Only sit there when the wind is favorable(in your face). Check which way he's approaching, make sure you don't have your treestand on or near his trail, they generally use the same trail over and over.
I'm assuming you have a trail cam up. Has he ever come during daylight? Sometimes they come at dawn. If he's coming at night because he's spooked, the only way you have a chance is if he's coming to visit a sow at the bait. Good luck!
