Are night vision rifle scopes illegal to own? I was looking at purchasing a collection that includes one. I know it is illegal to import and export them but have found nothing regarding possession.

They are legal to own.

Illegal to import??

I know the US have strict rules about NV equipment... but that's on the 'export' side of things. I wasn't aware that Canada had any importation limitations.

Nothing about them is illegal

The US has rules about exporting them, and we have rules about hunting with them and thats about it

America changed the rules a few years ago on night vision Canada
used to just need an import permit basically saying it was for here and
not exported out. I bought from Meyers in Washington state

Some night vision is covered under ITAR, most isn't. If it's already here, it's legal - regardless of what it is. Don't hunt at night with it - but whoever wrote that has never used the gear, or they wouldn't have bothered.

The illegal part is hunting at night. Otherwise you’re gtg.

This.

There are a number of companies that sell good NVG systems in Canada.

They are stupid expensive compare to what you would pay in U.S but this way you are not breaking u.s export laws and actually have someone to reach out for warranty if they break.

It's legal to hunt raccoons at night here.
Night time predator hunting seems popular in the states, maybe some day we can get that too.

What would a gen 1 NCstar 4 power scope with illuminated be worth here in Canada?

Honestly not a whole lot. And I would likely avoid any of the gen 1, particularly cheap gen 1 equipment. If you are going to go that route, I would highly recommend the ATN X-sight line. Both day and night capable, and will be every bit as good as a gen 1 NOD in the dark. Plus you can record video, etc.

Yes on the Russian stuff.
Stay away from the NCStar and similar stuff. You'll be lucky if it works out of the box.
