I am seriously considering a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22 56mm for my SL8-4 (short rail). I was wondering if anyone had tried this rifle/scope combination?

I already own 30mm Badger rings.

Some posts have suggested that the 56mm objective lens will not fit along the top rail.

If anyone has thoughts on putting a Nightforce atop an SL8-4, I would appreciate your time, as I am close to making the scope purchase.

I have a Burris 6-24X50mm Black Diamond scope on my SL8-4 with no problems. I have a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22X50 on my .308... love the scope!

Not the greatest pic of my SL8-4 but it will give you an idea.

Saw a Leupold Mark 4 4.5-14x50 LRT on one, it looked good & the guy was satisfied with it even though I think it is a bit of an overkill.

Do you think the 56 mm would clear the front end of the rail?

I guess it would depend on how sharp of an angle the objective bell housing has on the Nightforce and how far forward you are able to mount it. I have a Falcon Menace scope with a 56mm objective on another rifle. I will compare that one when I get back home and see if it looks like it will fit.

Thanks, I will await your findings.

In the meantime, I am thinking that someone out there should have tried this, or at least owns an SL8 and a 56mm Nightforce and can have a quick glance.

Looks like the Menace 4.5-18X56 would fit but it will require high rings. The Menace scope is shorter in length than the Burris pictured and would need to be mounted too far forward for the objective bell to angle down below the front of the rail. You will need high or possibly extra high rings depending on the brand.

Here the Menace is mounted on my Savage 12 with Burris Extreme Tactical medium rings on a Farrell 20moa base. Hope this helped and with luck someone who has mounted a Nightforce onto there SL8 will chime in.
Cheers.

good sights on a plastic rail...

yes, i have thought about that as well.

I have been tempted to go with the Bushnell 4200 tactical for that reason and cost, but i still thought that a 4200 was not a good match in value to the sl8.

Yeah the polymer top rail doesn't seem to hold zero very well with a big heavy scope mounted on it.:( That is one complaint about mine. I have a 20x Super Sniper mounted on my SL8-4 and every time I take the gun out it is always out a couple of inches either left or right. I would like to replace it with an aluminum rail. Used to be an outfit called DocRac that used to make them but looks like they kind of fell off the face of the earth and disappeared. I believe it is a DocRac rail shown in the picture in the link above. I hear the newer SL8-6 comes with an aluminum rail which would likely fit right on the older model. I'll have to see if one can be ordered from an HK dealer.:)

I'm kinda skeptical that even an aluminum rail would help, since it's still bolted to a poly receiver..

No doubt the SL8 is quite accurate out of the box, but there is only so much you can do to a poly rifle.
